This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the Second Workshop on Multimodal Analyses Enabling Artificial Agents in Human Interaction, MA3HMI 2014, held in Conjunction with INTERSPEECH 2014, in Singapore, Singapore, on September 14th, 2014. The 9 revised papers presented together with a keynote talk were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. They are organized in two sections: human-machine interaction and dialogs and speech recognition.

Multimodal Analyses enabling Artificial Agents in Human-Machine Interaction

Embodied conversational agents (ECA) and speech-based human–machine interfaces can together represent more advanced and more natural human–machine interaction. Fusion of both topics is a challenging agenda in research and production spheres. The important goal of human–machine interfaces is to provide content or functionality in the form of a dialog resembling face-to-face conversations. All natural interfaces strive to exploit and use different communication strategies that provide additional meaning to the content, whether they are human–machine interfaces for controlling an application or different ECA-based human–machine interfaces directly simulating face-to-face conversation. Coverbal Synchrony in Human-Machine Interaction presents state-of-the-art concepts of advanced environment-independent multimodal human–machine interfaces that can be used in different contexts, ranging from simple multimodal web-browsers (for example, multimodal content reader) to more complex multimodal human–machine interfaces for ambient intelligent environments (such as supportive environments for elderly and agent-guided household environments). They can also be used in different computing environments—from pervasive computing to desktop environments. Within these concepts, the contributors discuss several communication strategies, used to provide different aspects of human–machine interaction.

Four teens, who couldn't be any less alike, are thrown together because they share a single goal: to help themselves. Well, three of them do anyway. I, on the other hand, would rather be anywhere else than group therapy. I didn't think I needed any help. I wasn't "crazy" like the others because I already knew how to handle my problems...with fire. As long as there was always something to burn, I could face anything, including a few hours at group therapy with a drug addict, an alcoholic, and a big, angry "Leprechaun". What I didn't realize though, is that these people were going to become more than just my group mates. I learned that the longer you're stuck together, the stronger your relationships can be, so long as they can surpass the bitter trials of love, hate, and (what may be the hardest of them all) addiction.

The themes of the papers presented in this book emphasize theoretical and practical issues for modelling human-machine interaction, ranging from the attempt in describing “the spacing and orientation in co-present interaction” to the effort for developing multimodal interfaces, collecting and analysing interaction data and emergent behaviour as well as analysing the use of nonverbal and pragmatic elements of exchanges, implementing discourse control and virtual agents and using active listening in computer speech processing.

Development of Multimodal Interfaces: Active Listening and Synchrony

Adding to General Choi Hong Hi's masterpiece, the Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do, this supplemental volume seamlessly integrates into his 15 Volume set. Volume 16 adds more than 620 photos to the approximately 30,000 of General Choi's Encyclopedia plus an additional 403 pages, 494 diagrams and 55,800+ words - all extensively researched, documented and primarily based on General Choi's other books. Ko-Dang and U-Nam, two patterns connected by fate and politics, are invaluable parts of Taekwon-Do's history. While neither pattern was discarded entirely, both are complete patterns once considered part of the syllabus. Over time, the namesakes of Ko-Dang and U-Nam failed to continue to inspire a positive patriotic image for all Koreans as each presents acute political discomfort for one side of the Korean Peninsula; Ko-Dang for the North and U-Nam for the South. However, as Taekwon-Do's patterns are the core of the art, both patterns deserve inclusion in General Choi's Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do in order to document the whole of the art equally. In addition to Ko-Dang and U-Nam, Volume 16 also includes a new set of text descriptions for all of Taekwon-Do's patterns. The Condensed Patterns humbly continue the tradition in General Choi's books of improving the detail and clarity of the pattern descriptions while leaving the patterns themselves unchanged. From 1959's "Same as movement #6 from Pyung Ahn 4 [Sa Dan]," 1965's "L.B. stance" through to the Encyclopedia's presentation many improvements have been made over time. The Condensed Patterns continue this evolution by presenting all of the available text-based and footwork information offered in the Encyclopedia, the Condensed Patterns describe each pattern count in a brief and easy to consume format.
