The authors are internationally well recognized scientists belonging to those working presently in the frontline of the different subfields of this interdisciplinary area of environmental science; they give an integrated thorough overview on this hot topic. Extensive cross-referencing between chapters provides the readers with an easy access to all major areas. Due to the huge amount of material the text is published in two volumes (3/I and 3/J). It is expected that both volumes will soon become a major source of information and inspiration for all researchers actively working in PAH environmental chemistry or ecology.

During the past ten years a variety of methods involving mass spectrom etry have been developed for the analysis of environmentally important compounds. Much has been accomplished in that period to solve some of the important problems in the field. Growth of this methodology and its accomplishments has reached the point where an individual scientist can no longer have an in-depth knowledge of all the areas involved. We have attempted to provide this in-depth picture to those scientists con cerned by having the important topics treated by experts in the subject matter. In order to provide all the relevant material in one volume we begin with the general topics which provide the basic background material necessary to understand the techniques discussed in the in-depth topics. These general chapters are kept brief, containing only the essentials needed by the working scientist to deal with the practical applications. References in these chapters are chosen to permit a more complete study of each chapter. The concept for this book was developed during the activities of two of the editors under a NATO travel grant. These editors gratefully acknowledge this support which made the initial planning of this book possible. The editors would like to thank the individual authors of each chap ter for their cooperation and generously giving of their time for this project.

Aquatic Pollutants: Transformation and Biological Effects contains the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Aquatic Pollutants held at Noordwijkerhout (Amsterdam), The Netherlands on September 26-28, 1977. Organized into 47 chapters, this book first describes the aquatic pollutants and their potential biological effects. Subsequent chapters elucidate chemicals with pollution potential; multidetection approach to analysis of organic pollutants in water; volatilization of pollutants from water; microbial transformations of aromatic pollutants; and photochemical transformation of pollutants in water. Other chapters address oxidation of organic compounds in aquatic systems; laboratory microcosms for use in determining pollutant stress; continuous biomonitoring systems for detection of toxic levels of water pollutants; and health aspects of water recycling practices. This book will be useful as a review of existing knowledge in this field. It will also stimulate further thought and research.
