This Research Topic explores the functional significance of hormone receptors and the critical role of binding proteins in regulating various physiological processes. There is increasing awareness of the multifactorial nature of internal control mechanisms in controlling reproduction, growth and development, metabolism and stress. Specifically, we are interested in exploring the well-established and emerging aspects of hormones, receptors and binding protein-mediated functions in different species. We aim to explore the latest insights into different classes of hormone receptors and hormone-binding proteins as they form a complex with their respective ligand, leading to direct interaction with target tissues on multiple sites as endocrine, paracrine and autocrine regulators. This Research Topic includes the integrated actions of hormones and their interaction with the membrane and internal receptors. More recent studies proved that ligand-activated receptors, in addition to undergoing conformational changes, may also cleave to activate various intermediate molecules, leading to biochemical changes and significant biochemical changes. Studies that address these aspects are also of great interest to this special issue

The present eBook is the result of the Frontiers Research Topic entitled “Nutritional and environmental modulation of the endocrine system: effects on metabolism and growth”. It contains 12 chapters, comprising 7 original research articles, 3 reviews, and 2 minireviews. The objective of the Research Topic was to provide a multidisciplinary approach of cutting-edge research on metabolism and growth aiming to address key questions about the interplay between nutritional, environmental or other external factors (i.e. temperature or pollutants) and signals modulating feed intake with the endocrine system, regulating these processes. Evidences about the molecular principle behind the complex interactions of all these factors on the control of the endocrine and nervous systems regulating the metabolic process are presented. The knowledge provided by this eBook focusing in cells, model organisms and farmed species, have highlighted the importance of dietary and environmental factors, and their interactions with the endocrine system to regulate growth and metabolism.

The book describes the significant multidisciplinary research findings at the Università Politecnica delle Marche and the expected future advances. It addresses some of the most dramatic challenges posed by today’s fast-growing, global society and the changes it has caused. It also discusses solutions to improve the wellbeing of human beings. The book covers the main research achievements in the various disciplines of the life sciences, and includes chapters that highlight mechanisms relevant to all aspects of human diseases, the molecular, cellular, and functional basis of therapy, and its translation into the management of people’s health needs. It also describes research on traditional and innovative foods to enhance quality, safety and functionality, and to develop bioactive/nutraceutical compounds. Further chapters address conservation and management of various environments, from the forests to the oceans, describing the studies on countermeasures against climate changes and terrestrial/aquatic pollutants, and on terrestrial/marine biodiversity, ecosystems and landscapes, erosion of genetic biodiversity, innovative aquaculture feed, sustainable crop production and management of forests.
