Sammons During the month of October 1816, San Francisco received a visit from the Russian brig Rurik, only the third non-Spanish vessel to call at what was then a small colonial garrison and mission town on the extreme edge of Spanish North America. In this book the author provides English translations of reports of the visit (originally in German and French) by the ship's captain Otto von Kotzebue, naturalist Adelbert von Chamisso, and on-board artist Louis Choris. Edward Mornin provides biographical sketches of the three reporters, a historical account of Rurik's round-the-world voyage, and a critical discussion of the observations of Kotzebue, Chamisso, and Choris, with their ideological and cultural determinants, especially with regard to the Indians under the control of the Spanish missionaries. The first English edition of this important voyage appeared two years after its first publication in Russian in 1828. A New Voyage Round the World in the Years 1823, 24, 25, and 26

Otto von Kotzebue wurde 1787 als Sohn deutscher Eltern in Reval/Estland geboren und war Offizier der Russischen Marine. Bereits in seinen frühen Jugendjahren fuhr er zusammen mit dem Kapitän von Krusenstern mit auf die erste russische Weltumsegelung. Im Jahr 1815 übernahm er die Leitung einer Expedition um die Welt, an der auch wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter teilnahmen, wie unter anderem der Dichter Adalbert von Chamisso und der Maler Louis Schoris. Auf der dreijährigen Reise durchquerten sie die Bering-Straße mit seinem Schiff "Rurik" und entdeckte den nach ihm benannten Kotzebuesund. 1823 - 1826 hisste von Kotzebue erneut die Segel um ein weiteres Mal die Erde in wissenschaftlicher Mission zu umrunden. Ziel dieser Fahrt war die Ergänzung der Ergebnisse, die sie auf ihrer ersten Reise gewonnen hatten. Das vorliegende Buch beinhaltet die Reiseerfahrungen dieser Expedition und ist ein hoch interessant zu lesendes Werk. Es handelt sich hierbei um den zweiten Band der zweiteiligen Ausgabe und ist in englischer Sprache vorliegend.
