This is the fourth edition of a work which first appeared in 1965. The first edition had approximately one thousand pages in a single volume. This latest volume has almost three thousand pages in 3 volumes which is a fair measure of the pace at which the discipline of physical metallurgy has grown in the intervening 30 years. Almost all the topics previously treated are still in evidence in this version which is approximately 50% bigger than the previous edition. All the chapters have been either totally rewritten by new authors or thoroughly revised and expanded, either by the third-edition authors alone or jointly with new co-authors. Three chapters on new topics have been added, dealing with dry corrosion, oxidation and protection of metal surfaces; the dislocation theory of the mechanical behavior of intermetallic compounds; and (most novel) a chapter on polymer science for metallurgists, which analyses the conceptual mismatch between metallurgists' and polymer scientists' way of looking at materials. Special care has been taken throughout all chapters to incorporate the latest experimental research results and theoretical insights. Several thousand citations to the research and review literature are included in this edition. There is a very detailed subject index, as well as a comprehensive author index. The original version of this book has long been regarded as the standard text in physical metallurgy and this thoroughly rewritten and updated version will retain this status.

Strength of Metals and Alloys is a collection of papers presented at the 5th International Conference on the Strength of Metals and Alloys held in Aachen, Germany, on August 27-31, 1979. Contributors explore advances that have been made in understanding the strength of metals and alloys and cover topics ranging from plasticity and crystal structure to microstructural models for friction and wear; dynamical effects in deformation; and microscopic mechanisms of metal fatigue. This volume is comprised of 13 chapters and begins with an analysis of the differences between the plastic deformation of face-centered cubic, hexagonal close-packed, and body-centered cubic metals in relation to intrinsic dislocation mobilities resulting from the interaction of the dislocation core with the crystal lattice. The reader is then introduced to dislocation models for fatigue and their application to cases of friction and wear. The following chapters focus on the mechanisms controlling the creep of single phase metals and alloys; precipitation and dispersion hardening; deformation of polycrystals; solid solution hardening; and superposition of alloy hardening, strain hardening, and dynamic recovery. The results of in situ deformation experiments using high-voltage electron microscopy are also presented. The final chapter is devoted to the mechanisms underlying the recovery and recrystallization of doped tungsten. This monograph will be a valuable resource for metallurgists and materials scientists.

Decomposition of Alloys: The Early Stages contains the proceedings of the 2nd Acta-Scripta Metallurgica Conference held in Sonnenberg, Germany, on September 19-23, 1983. Contributors discuss the early stages of decomposition in alloys, placing emphasis on the unsolved problems of the field, rather than on the solved ones. This book has 36 chapters and opens with a discussion on developments in the theory of the kinetics of first-order phase transitions, followed by an analysis of metastability and spinodal nucleation; neutron scattering during decomposition of aluminum alloys; Ostwald ripening of precipitates; and phase stability under irradiation. The next chapters explore decomposition processes in Al-Zn alloys; thermal decomposition in Cu-Ni-Fe alloys; and the initial stages of discontinuous precipitation reactions. Seit 1959 versuche ich in Göttingen, Studierende der Physik nach dem V 01' examen für ein Aufbaustudium der Physikalischen Metallkunde zu interessieren. Diese Aufgabe stellt sich heute an vielen Hochschulen, denn allgemein hat sich der Beruf des Metallkundlers in der Forschung, der Entwicklung metallischer Werkstoffe und ihrer industriellen Produktion als sehr befriedigend und aus sichtsreich erwiesen. Nicht nur ist die Metall-Technik außerordentlich vielseitig und lädt zu wissenschaftlicher Durchdringung ein, sondern auch andere Bereiche der Festkörper-verarbeitenden Industrie benutzen unter der Überschrift" Werk stoffwissenschaften" (Materials Science) zunehmend metallkundliche Methoden, etwa bei keramischen Werkstoffen, Halbleitermaterialien, Kunststoffen usw. Für ein solches Berufsbild ist heute ein Grundstudium der Physik sehr geeignet, während Metallkundler früherer Jahrgänge häufig als Chemiker oder Maschinen bau-Ingenieure begonnen haben. Das Grundstudium der Physik bietet neben strengem mathematischen Rüstzeug verschiedene Vorlesungen und Praktika der Experimentalphysik sowie den theoretisch-physikalischen Kursus incl. der Quantentheorie. Im 5. und 6. Semester leiten Einführungsvorlesungen über Festkörperphysik in das Gebiet der Physikalischen Metallkunde über. Sie lehnen sich auch in Deutschland häufig an das Lehrbuch von Ch. Kittel [1.1] an.
