Zakládací mýty a legendy se z předhelénistické Levanty zachovaly – snad s výjimkou Starého zákona – ve formě útržkovitých informací nejrůznější provenience, od onomastiky a struktury královských seznamů po stručné zprávy dobyvatelů. Případové studie epigrafických pramenů od rané doby bronzové (Ebla) přes pozdní bronz (Ugarit) po ranou dobu železnou (Aramejci, Starý zákon, Pelištejci) odhalují jednotná pravidla, která podobu těchto legend jako prostředků etnické inkorporace a politické legitimizace určovala. Že reflexe těchto pravidel mohla být schopnými autory využita k vlastním cílům, je doloženo analýzou tvorby ugaritského písaře Ilimilka. The foundation myths and legends from the pre-Hellenic Levant were preserved, perhaps with the exception of the Old Testament, in the form of fragmentary information of different origins – in onomastics and the structure of royal lists for conquerors’ brief reports. Case studies of epigraphic sources from the Early Bronze Age (Ebla), via the Late Bronze Age (Ugarit) through the Early Iron Age (Arameans, Old Testament, Philistines) reveal unified rules which determined the legends as means of ethnic incorporation and political legitimization. That capable authors were able to use these rules to their own ends has been documented by an analysis of the works of the scribe Ilimilku of Ugarit. Die Gründungsmythen und Legenden der vorhellenistischen Levante sind – vielleicht mit Ausnahme des Alten Testaments – nur in Form bruchstückhafter Informationen unterschiedlicher Herkunft überliefert: von der Onomastik und Struktur der Königslisten bis hin zu kurzen Berichten von Eroberern. Die Einzelstudien untersuchen die diesbezüglichen Quellen von der Früh- (Ebla) über die Spätbronzezeit (Ugarit) bis hin zur Früheisenzeit (Aramäer, Altes Testament, Philister). Dabei zeigt sich, dass diese, bestimmte Strukturregeln folgende Legenden vor allem zur Festigung der Gemeinschaft und der Herrschaftslegitimation dienten. Dessen waren sich auch die antiken Autoren bewusst, was die Analyse des Werks des ugaritischen Schreibers Ilimilku veranschaulicht.
