La storia contiene da sempre un sottotesto emotivo, ma le consuetudini e i metodi della disciplina e l’idea della natura eminentemente soggettiva delle emozioni hanno a lungo indotto gli storici a lasciare lo studio di questa sfera ad esperti di altri settori. Negli ultimi decenni, tuttavia, la tendenza alla collaborazione interdisciplinare, con la conseguente evanescenza degli steccati tradizionali, gli sviluppi della storiografia femminista e della storia orale hanno incoraggiato un crescente interesse storiografico per lo studio diacronico delle emozioni umane. Le celebrazioni dei 150 anni dell’Unità d’Italia hanno rappresentato, da questo punto di vista, un’ottima occasione per presentare un nuovo filone di ricerca, ma anche per suggerire nuove prospettive da cui guardare alla storia politica italiana, mettendo al centro il rapporto fra emozioni e potere. Ripercorrendo alcuni passaggi cruciali della storia nazionale, a partire dalla rivoluzione del 1848-1849 e dal Risorgimento, attraversando le vicende politiche del primo Novecento, il fascismo, l’Italia repubblicana, per approdare ai nostri giorni, i saggi raccolti in questo volume provano a riflettere sul ruolo delle emozioni nella vita della nazione italiana, nel tentativo di mostrare non solo il carattere emotivo della politica, ma anche il carattere politico delle emozioni.

This edited book addresses the diversity across time and space of the sites, actors and practices of feminist translation from 1945-2000. The contributors examine what happens when a politically motivated text is translated linguistically and culturally, the translators and their aims, and the strategies employed when adapting texts to locally resonating discourses. The collection aims to answer these questions through case studies and a conceptual rethinking of the process of politically engaged translation, considering not only trained translators and publishers, but also feminist activists and groups, NGOs and writers. The idea of the “mamma italiana” is one of the most widespread and recognizable stereotypes in perceptions of Italian national character both within and beyond Italy. This figure makes frequent appearances in jokes and other forms of popular culture, but it has also been seen as shaping the lived experience of modern-day Italians of both sexes, as well as influencing perceptions of Italy in the wider world. This interdisciplinary collection examines the invented tradition of mammismo but also contextualizes it by discussing other, often contrasting, ways in which the role of mothers, and the mother-son relationship, have been understood and represented in culture and society over the last century and a half, both in Italy and in its diaspora.
