Peter Behnstedt

Der Sprachatlas basiert auf Sprachmaterialien, die Peter Behnstedt in mehrjahrigen Feldforschungen in Syrien gesammelt hat. Dazu wurden an 508 Untersuchungspunkten Daten erhoben.Von den rund 520 doppelseitigen Karten befassen sich 130 mit der Lautentwicklung der syrisch-arabischen Dialekte, 180 mit der Morphologie sowie 190 mit dem Lexikon. Neben dem Grundwortschatz ist sehr viel Volkskundliches (z.B. Bezeichnungenfur Haustiere und landwirtschaftliche Gerate) berucksichtigt. Die letzten 20 Karten fassen den dialektologischen Ertrag des Materials zusammen und stellen die verschiedenen Dialektgruppen und -untergruppen anhand ihrer charakteristischen Merkmale dar.

Since the author's publication of Die nordjemenitischen Dialekte. Teil 1: Atlas in 1985, a lot of new field work has been done in North Yemen and adjacent areas. Therefore a new atlas of the region in English suggested itself. The atlas consists of 192 fully coloured maps with 30 phonetical and phonological maps, 100 morphological and 60 lexical ones.
