The Hegelian-Marxist idea of alienation fell out of favor during the post-metaphysical rejection of humanism and essentialist views of human nature. In this book Jaeggi draws on phenomenological analyses grounded in modern conceptions of agency, along with recent work in the analytical tradition, to reconceive of alienation as the absence of a meaningful relationship to oneself and others, which manifests itself in feelings of helplessness and the despondent acceptance of ossified social roles and expectations. A revived approach to alienation helps critical social theory engage with phenomena, such as meaninglessness, isolation, and indifference, which have broad implications for issues of justice. By severing alienationÕs link to a problematic conception of human essence while retaining its social-philosophical content, Jaeggi provides resources for a renewed critique of social pathologies, a much-neglected concern in contemporary liberal political philosophy. Her work revisits the arguments of Rousseau, Hegel, Kierkegaard, and Heidegger, placing them in dialogue with Thomas Nagel, Bernard Williams, and Charles Taylor.

Por que demos a este ciclo de debates o título "Por um feminismo para os 99%"? Inspirados no livro de Cinzia Arruzza, Tithi bhattacharya e Nancy Fraser, publicado pela Boitempo em 2019, escolhemos chamar atenção para as mulheres da classe trabalhadora: "Racializadas, migrantes ou brancas; cis, trans ou não alinhadas à conformidade de gênero; que exercem o trabalho doméstico ou são trabalhadoras sexuais; remuneradas por hora, semana, mês ou nunca remuneradas; desempregadas ou subempregadas; jovens ou idosas"1. Nosso objetivo é, enfim, discutir as premissas de um feminismo incondicional- mente internacionalista e anticapitalista, que cerre fileiras com os movimentos antirracistas, ambientalistas e pelos direitos de trabalhadores e de imigrantes. Os movimentos por emancipação liderados por mulheres tiveram origem muito antes do que hoje se convencionou chamar de "feminismo". Há séculos, as mulheres lutam contra o patriarcalismo, sistema de opressão que se manifesta no tecido social de diferentes culturas. A diversidade do feminismo atual se explica pela existência de formas bastante variadas de pensar a luta das mulheres: indígenas e empresariais; liberais e socialistas; individualistas e coletivas. Isso se deve à maior ou menor articulação da análise do patriarcado a outros aspectos da formação das sociedades capitalistas modernas. A superação da opressão das mulheres, especialmente na família e no trabalho, continua sendo ponto de atenção para a tão sonhada sociedade igualitária. As feministas liberais defendem a individualidade e o empreendedorismo e preconizam o "empoderamento" como saída para a desigualdade de gênero; as feministas radicais apostam na coletividade, porém enxergam no patriarcado a raiz de todas as opressões; e as feministas marxistas reivindicam a centralidade do trabalho e da classe na identificação da opressão e da exploração sofridas pelas mulheres no sistema capitalista. Tentaremos, nesta pequena coletânea de textos, dar indícios de cada uma dessas vertentes, de modo a estimular leitores e leitoras a tomar parte nessa necessária renovação do pensamento radical feita pelo "marxismo feminista". Para tanto, reunimos aqui excertos de livros e de textos da revista Margem Esquerda, publicados pela Boitempo, com os quais esperamos refletir coletivamente sobre o passado, o presente e, sobretudo, a construção de um futuro mais justo e digno.
