An underlying assumption undergirding institutions of higher education is that they serve as a means to upward socioeconomic mobility and, in turn, a way to address poverty that is tied to certain racialized/sexualized bodies. Although the education crisis is not an American or European problem in the geographic sense, but instead a global problem that plays itself out differentially across space and time, this volume focuses on the westernized university, in the US and abroad. It asks questions about what is westernized about the university, what its aims are, and how those who work in, through and outside these sites of knowledge production—with local or global social movements—can participate in the slow, careful process of decolonizing the westernized university. Decolonizing the Westernized University: Interventions in Philosophy of Education from Within and Without provides a sharper understanding of the crisis and the responses to the westernized university at multiple sites around the world. As an intervention in the philosophy of education discourse, which tends to assume the university is a neutral space, this collection will be of particular value to students and scholars working in philosophy of education, Latina/o philosophy, Africana philosophy, social epistemology, education, cultural studies, and ethnic studies, as well as to intellectual activists in the United States, south of the border, and around the world.

This Fall 2010 (VIII, 2) issue of Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge, entitled “Islam: From Phobia to Understanding,” includes the proceedings of an international conference on “Debating Islamophobia,” co-organized by the issue co-editors in Madrid, Spain, in May 2009. Beginning with the lead article by the late Nasr Abu-Zayd (1943-2010) from which the title of the issue is adopted, and to whose author this collection is dedicated in celebration of his life and work, the papers explore the nature and meaning of Islamophobia and its diverse unfolding in specific national and historical contexts. The Muhammad Cartoon Crisis as Transitional Drama,” “Historiographic Narratives: The Discourse Strategies for Constructing Expellable “Moorish” Subjects,” “Islamophobia and Sexism: Muslim Women in the Western Mass Media,” “Discrepancies Around the Use of the Term ‘Islamophobia,'” and “The Homelessness of Muslimness: The Muslim Umma as a Diaspora.” The publication is an academic contribution to the study of Islamophobia, a tool for social researchers and useful to overcome the prejudices and institutional barriers that produce second-class citizens at the heart of Western Europe. This Fall 2011 (IX, 4) issue of Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge, entitled “Contesting Memory: Museumizations of Migration in Comparative Global Context,” includes papers from the conference on “Museums and Migration” organized by the volume co-editors on June 25-26, 2010, at the Maison des Science de l’Homme (MSH) in Paris. The focus here is on questions of representation and social agency of both migrants and migration museum officials, adopting a comparative perspective on the complex and conflictive articulation between how migrants are represented by themselves and by museum institutions. Migrants are not passive but social agents actively involved in their communities and socially vigilant of the way they are treated, perceived and represented by the host society. They produce also their own representations that are often in conflict with Western hegemonic perceptions of their cultures and identities. Their strong presence in global cities and metropolitan societies today confronts the dominant society with issues of racial/ethnic discrimination and historical memory otherwise ignored by hegemonic Western views. The articles collected in this Spring 2009 (VII, 2) issue of Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge entitled “Historicizing Anti-Semitism” were part of an international conference entitled, “The Post-September 11 New Ethnic/Racial Configurations in Europe and the United States: The Case of Anti-Semitism,” organized by Lewis Gordon and Ramón Grosfoguel at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (MSH) in Paris on June 29–30, 2007. Part of a series inaugurated by a discussion on Islamophobia, they brought a majority Jewish group of scholars together in the hope of bringing to the forum a critical exchange and conversation among the participants. The articles gathered here do not represent a unified voice but those often unheard in discussions of anti-Semitism. The focus on anti-Semitism in this collection raises the question of how ancient and Medieval versions of anti-Jewish practices should be interpreted, especially since even the term “Semite” came about as an effort in eighteenth-century French and German scholarship to organize Arabic, Aramaic, and Hebrew under a single linguistic nomenclature, which was crystallized in the nineteenth century in the work of the French scholar Ernest Renan. Depuis maintenant plus d'une décennie, les travaux du groupe de chercheurs modernité/colonialité contribuent à renouveler profondément le champ des interrogations de la théorie critique latino-américaine. Ce réseau d'universitaires, pour la plupart originaires d'Amérique du Sud ou de la Caraïbe, a engagé une déconstruction volontairement " située du récit ethno-centré et intra-européen de la modernité. En replaçant la colonisation ibérique du "Nouveau Monde" à l'origine de la formation du monde moderne/ capitaliste, ces chercheurs ont jeté la lumière sur la dimension intrinsèquement coloniale de la modernité occidentale : les différentes formes de violences impériales ne constituent en aucun cas les conséquences indirectes d'une modernité globalement libératrice, mais l'un des aspects fondamentaux d'une configuration de pouvoir spécifique qui allie, dans un même mouvement, rhétorique émancipatrice et logique oppressive. La modernité/ colonialité n'a pas disparu avec les décolonisations : opérant au niveau ontologique (la colonialité de l'être),et épistémique (la colonialité du savoir), elle est devenue un système de pouvoir articulée au niveau planétaire. Les articles ici réunis se proposent d'explorer, selon des perspectives théoriques très diverses, quelques-unes des implications épistémologiques, éthiques et politiques de cc qui constitue, pour les auteurs, une véritable " option décoloniale ". Au-delà de la diversité des approches, une constante : toutes ces interventions clament l'urgente nécessité de dépasser les apories de la modernité occidentale et de poser les fondements d'une transmodernité multitopique.

Challenges the framing of Puerto Rican cultural politics as a dichotomy between nationalism and colonialism. Discussions of Puerto Rican cultural politics usually fall into one of two categories, nationalist or colonialist. Puerto Rican Jam moves beyond this narrow dichotomy, elaborating alternatives to dominant postcolonial theories, and includes essays written from the perspectives of groups that are not usually represented, such as gays and lesbians, youth, blacks, and women. Among the topics discussed are the limitations of nationalism as a transformative and democratizing political discourse, the contradictory impact of American colonialism, language politics, and the 1928 U.S. congressional hearings on women's suffrage in Puerto Rico.

The westernized university is a site where the production of knowledge is embedded in Eurocentric epistemologies that are posited as objective, disembodied and universal and in which non-Eurocentric knowledges, such as black and indigenous ones, are largely marginalized or dismissed. Consequently, it is an institution that produces racism, sexism and epistemic violence. While this is increasingly being challenged by student activists and some faculty, the westernized university continues to engage in diversity and internationalization initiatives that reproduce structural disadvantages and to work within neoliberal agendas that are incompatible with decolonization. This book draws on decolonial theory to explore the ways in which Eurocentrism in the westernized university is both reproduced and unsettled. It outlines some of the challenges that accompany the decolonization of teaching, learning, research and policy, as well as providing examples of successful decolonial moments and processes. It draws on examples from universities in Europe, New Zealand and the Americas. This book represents a highly timely contribution from both early career and established thinkers in the field. Its themes will be of interest to student activists and to academics and scholars who are seeking to decolonize their research and teaching. It constitutes a decolonizing intervention into the crisis in which the westernized university finds itself.
