In June 1939 Annemarie Schwarzenbach and fellow writer Ella Maillart set out from Geneva in a Ford, heading for Afghanistan. The first women to travel Afghanistan's Northern Road, they fled the storm brewing in Europe to seek a place untouched by what they considered to be Western neuroses. The Afghan journey documented in All the Roads Are Open is one of the most important episodes of Schwarzenbach's turbulent life. Her incisive, lyrical essays offer a unique glimpse of an Afghanistan already touched by the “fateful laws known as progress,” a remote yet “sensitive nerve centre of world politics” caught amid great powers in upheaval. Annemarie von Matt und Sonja Sekula stammen beide aus der Innerschweiz. Sekula wirkt ab 1936 in New York zuerst im Kreis der in den USA im Exil lebenden Surrealisten und danach in demjenigen amerikanischer Avantgardekünstler. Beide schreiben schon als junge Frauen, treten aber zunächst als Malerinnen an die Öffentlichkeit. Die Doppelbegabung manifestiert sich in Werken, die mit Texten versehen sind. Unter den schriftstellerischen Arbeiten ragen eindringliche, manchmal wortspielerische Kurznotate mit autobiografischem Hintergrund hervor. Der literarische Liebes-Brief wird zu einem wichtigen Medium. Sonja Sekulas Arbeit entwickelt sich im Unterschied zu derjenigen von Annemarie von Matt immer in Berührung und Auseinandersetzung mit den ambitioniertesten künstlerischen Positionen ihrer Zeit. Die Doppel-Monografie enthält neben zahlreichen Dokumenten zu Leben und Werk der beiden Künstlerinnen unbekannte bildnerische Arbeiten, Bild-Text-Montagen und unveröffentlichte literarische Texte, die in einer umfassenden Recherche entdeckt worden sind.
