In the Gospel of Matthew it is the Messiah, Jesus Son of David, who is God's only agent for the fulfillment of all righteousness. If this is the case, the question is what is the function of the Torah when the kingdom of God is to appear. Roland Deines demonstrates the Matthean understanding of the new place and function of the Torah in the kingdom of the Messiah through a detailed exegesis of the crucial text Matthew 5:13-20 in the context of the whole gospel. It becomes clear that Matthew is not the advocate of a law-abiding community but a theologian with a genuine profile who is able to show that the new message of Jesus signifies a transformation and not a straight continuation or a nullification of the biblical writings regarded as law and prophets. Ausgangspunkt ist der zentrale Text Mt 5,17-20, der nicht ohne die dazugehorenden Verse 13-16 verstanden werden kann. In ihm stellt der Evangelist programmatisch sein Verstandnis der Tora in der Zeit der Erfullung dar, die mit dem Wirken Jesu begonnen hat. Als Sohn Davids ist Jesus derjenige, der die biblischen Erwartungen und Hoffnungen auf eine eschatologische Gerechtigkeit erfullt. Wenn aber der Messias den Weg der Gerechtigkeit eroffnet hat, dann ist die Frage zu klaren, welche Funktion der Tora in dieser heilsgeschichtlich neuen Epoche zukommt. Matthaus stellt sich dieser Aufgabe, indem er das Verhaltnis von Gerechtigkeit, Tora und Messias aufgrund seiner biblisch-theologischen Reflexion des Christusereignisses neu bestimmt, wobei dem Messias als Sohn Davids die entscheidende Funktion zur Herauffuhrung der Gerechtigkeit zugeschrieben wird. Die Tora wird in die Gebote Jesu transformiert und behalt ihre Relevanz fur die christliche Gemeinde einzig in dieser Gestalt und aufgrund seiner Autoritat.Das Ziel der neuen eschatologischen Gerechtigkeit ist das Hineinbringen aller Volker in das Reich Gottes. So kann die Bergpredigt in Ubereinstimmung mit dem Gesamtkontext des ersten Evangeliums als Anleitung zu einer missionarischen Jungerexistenz gelesen werden. Damit eroffnen sich zahlreiche neue Verstandnismoglichkeiten, die es erlauben, Matthaus als dezidiert christologisch argumentierenden und heilsgeschichtlich orientierten Theologen wiederzuentdecken.

This volume, the latest contribution to the international Corpus Judaeo-Hellenisticum Novi Testamenti (CJH), investigates New Testament and Septuagint descriptions of theophanic interactions with the world. The CJH project aims to improve the understanding of the individual New Testament writings as part of the culture of Hellenistic Judaism. This final volume complements studies on Philo, Josephus, non-textual evidence, and non-canonical pseudepigraphal writings, and focuses on the development of linguistic and theological concepts within and between the LXX and the New Testament. Thematically, the volume considers the possible impact of religious experiences on biblical texts: according to the biblical authors Israel experienced God as speaking and acting on its behalf, occasionally in visible, audible, and tangible ways. English summary: This collection of articles is the result of an international symposium in Eisenach 2003 dealing with the New Testament and Philo as two important sources for Hellenistic Judaism in the 1st century AD. Specialists in Philo and the New Testament treat common subjects in both literary corpora showing the advantage of involving Philonic studies in the New Testament and vice versa. The symposium is part of the research project Corpus Judaeo-Hellenisticum Novi Testamenti which works on embedding the New Testament in its Jewish-Hellenistic context. German description: Der Band gibt die Ergebnisse eines internationalen Symposiums wieder, das im Rahmen des Projekts Corpus Judaeo-Hellenisticum Novi Testamenti im Mai 2003 in Eisenach und Jena stattfand. In ubergreifenden Standortbestimmungen (u.a. durch Greg L. Sterling u. L. Hurtado) wird grundlegend das Verhaltnis von Philo und dem Neuen Testament reflektiert.In den Einzelbeitragen, die mehrheitlich die Form von Paar-Vortragen aufweisen, nehmen Philo-Spezialisten und Neutestamentler aus wechselseitiger Perspektive heraus u.a. zu Fragen der Inspiration, Mystik, Logos-Theologie und Anthropologie im Werk Philos bzw. einzelner neutestamentlicher Schriften Stellung.
