This book tells the story of the rise and decline of the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America (UE) from 1933 to 1990. Once the third-largest industrial union in the United States, the UE was the most powerful left-wing institution in U.S. history and arguably the most significant victim of the anti-communist purges that marked post-World War II America. This is an institutional study of the formation of the UE and the struggle for its control by left-wing and right-wing factions. Unlike most books on unions during the Cold War, this study carries the story up to the present, showing the long-term effects of the ideological battles.

In continuità con i seminari organizzati sui docenti che hanno dato prestigio alla Prima Facoltà di Architettura del Politecnico di Milano (oggi Facoltà di Architettura e Società) nella seconda metà del '900 - Franca Helg (2006),Marco Zanuso (2007), Vittoriano Viganò (2008) - il volume ha come obiettivo la presentazione critica della figura e della ricerca di Eugenio Battisti: storico, innovatore degli studi interpretativi dell'arte e dell'architettura, anticipatore dell'interdisciplinarità tra storia e progetto. Con questa iniziativa, la Triennale di Milano intende rendere omaggio a Battisti, curatore della mostra "Il luogo del lavoro. Dalla manualità al comando a distanza", organizzata nel 1986 in preparazione della XVII Esposizione internazionale, che ha rappresentato uno straordinario momento di analisi e dibattito sul tema della progettazione degli spazi destinati al lavoro, investiti da profonde, talvolta traumatiche, trasformazioni, con ripercussioni sulle abitudini di vita e sui rapporti sociali.

Between 1935 and 1946 a group of photographers working for the federal government fanned out across the country to record American life in pictures. This massive photographic project, carried out primarily under the auspices of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and the Office of War Information (OWI) and later preserved at the Library of Congress, was unrivaled in scope: no comparable attempt to document life in this country has ever been made. The Times of Sorrow and Hope features 150 selected images from the approximately 6,000 Pennsylvania photographs. These images cover themes ranging from coal mining, steelworkers, and women in wartime industries to cities and small towns, farm life, family life, and life among the Amish and Mennonites. The book also includes an essay introducing the FSA's own project, an introduction to the catalog of the entire collection of Pennsylvania photographs, and a historical essay on Pennsylvania during the Great Depression and World War II.
