Eine erhellende Studie, die Impulse der Gender Studies für die Wissenschaftsgeschichte aufzuzeigen vermag. Auch Wissenschaft hat ein Geschlecht. Die Konsequenzen dieser These untersucht der vorliegende Band am Beispiel der Kulturwissenschaften. Mit dem Zeitraum von 1890 bis 1945 konzentriert er sich auf jene Epoche, in der sich die Universitäten für die Frauen öffnen und sie zum ersten Mal regulär am System Wissenschaft partizipieren läßt. Das Verhältnis von Wissenschaft und Geschlechterdifferenz kommt dabei in seiner Vielgestaltigkeit in den Blick: Es wird einerseits auf der Ebene des wissenschaftlichen Diskurses, seiner Rhetorik und seiner Epistemologie, analysiert. Andererseits wird die Arbeit einzelner Wissenschaftlerinnen, die innerhalb oder jenseits des universitären Betriebs tätig waren (z.B. Hilma Borelius, Ricarda Huch, Vernon Lee), vorgestellt. So belegen die fünfzehn internationalen Beiträge aus ganz verschiedenen Perspektiven, welche Impulse die Gender Studies der Wissenschaftsgeschichte zu vermitteln mögen. »Resonant Alterities« bridges the gap between sound studies and literary criticism. A queer ghost story by Vernon Lee, an occultist novel of psychic adventure by Algernon Blackwood, a dystopian science fiction tale by J.G. Ballard and a post-traumatic short novel by Don DeLillo are its primary objects of analysis. Each is explored within the context of its contemporary cultural debates on sound. Meanwhile, all four theory-enriched readings focus on intersecting and desire-laden processes of meaning making, knowledge production and subject formation. Focal points are aurally/audio-visually structured phenomena expressive of both collective and individual anxieties.

Im Mittelpunkt der Studie stehen Verführungsgeschichten aus dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert: „Le Rouge et le Noir“ von Stendhal (1830), „La Regenta“ von Clarín (1884/85), „Casanovas Heimfahrt“ von Arthur Schnitzler (1918) sowie „The Monkey“ (1934) und „Ehrengard“ (1962) von Isak Dinesen. All diesen Texten ist gemeinsam, daß das „Goldene Zeitalter“ des Verführers längst vorbei ist, so daß sich die männlichen wie auch die weiblichen Helden regelrecht an ihren klassischen Vorbildern abarbeiten müssen. Die Texte deuten Konstellationen an, die nicht eingelöst werden können, sie erwecken Erwartungen beim Leser, die enttäuscht werden müssen.

Sonic Interventions makes a compelling case for the importance of sound in theorizing literature, subjectivity and culture. Sound is usually understood as our second sense and – as our belief in a visually dominated culture prevails – remains of secondary interest. Western cultures are considered to be predominantly visual, while other societies are thought to place more importance on the acoustic dimension. This volume questions these assumptions by examining how sound differs from, and acts in relationship to, the visual. It moves beyond theoretical dichotomies (between the visual and the sonic, the oral and literature) and, instead, investigates sonic interventions in their often multi-faceted forms. The case studies deal with political appropriations of music and sounds, they explore the poetic use of the sonic in novels and plays, they develop theoretical concepts out of sonic phenomena, and pertain to identity formation and the practice of mixing in hip hop, opera and dancehall sessions. Ultimately, the book brings to the fore what roles sound may play for the formation of gendered identity, for the stabilization or questioning of race as a social category, and the conception of place. Their intricate interventions beckon critical attention and offer rich material for cultural analysis.
