"We invented the Blaue Reiter while sitting at the coffee table ... both of us loved blue. Franz Marc, the horses; I liked the riders. So the name arose spontaneously," recalled Wassily Kandinsky. They both wanted to break with the old, academic painting traditions, create a platform for a new stylistic vocabulary that would offer room for multifaceted forms of expression, based on their shared belief in a "spiritual" dimension of art. In 1912 they assembled a programmatic volume: Der Blaue Reiter Almanach (The Blue Rider Almanac). It gathered texts and images from a variety of cultures, by various artists. Woodcuts from Borneo were included, as was Russian folk art, along with naïve and abstract contemporary art. Starting with the written work, which served as the foundation for Kandinsky's and Marc's oeuvres, this exquisite volume presents key works by both founding fathers, together with historical photographs.Exhibition: Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/basel 4.9.2016-22.1.2017

Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) gilt als Vorkämpfer der sozial engagierten Malerei, er ist der wichtigste Vertreter des Realismus. Diese der schonungslosen Darstellung der Wahrheit verpflichtete Kunstrichtung stellte die von der Akademie geprägte, idealisierende Malerei infrage und schockierte die Pariser Gesellschaft des 19. Jahrhunderts. Courbet wurde zu einer Leitfigur der aufrührerischen Künstlerboheme und pflegte regen Austausch mit tonangebenden Dichtern und Künstlern. Er war aber keineswegs nur Bürgerschreck, sondern vor allem ein großer Revolutionär der Landschaftsmalerei. Das Buch führt anhand von sieben Essays zu ausgewählten Aspekten in das Leben und Werk des Künstlers ein, dessen Gemälde auch diejenigen begeistern, die sich nicht täglich mit Kunst beschäftigen. Edward Hopper's world-famous paintings articulate an idiosyncratic view of modern life. With his impressive subjects, independent pictorial vocabulary, and virtuoso play of colors, Hopper continues to influence to this day the image of the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. He began his career as an illustrator and became famous around the globe for his oil paintings. They testify to his great interest in the effects of color and his mastery in depicting light and shadow. The Fondation Beyeler is devoting its large exhibition in the spring of 2020 to Hopper's iconic images of the vast American landscape. The catalogue gathers together all of the paintings, watercolors, and drawings from the 1910s to the 1960s on display in the exhibition, and supplements them with essays focused on the subject of depicting landscape.
