Thinking Chinese Translation is a practical and comprehensive course for advanced undergraduates and postgraduate students of Chinese. Thinking Chinese Translation explores the ways in which memory, general knowledge, and creativity (summed up as ‘schema’) contribute to the linguistic ability necessary to create a good translation. The course develops the reader’s ability to think deeply about the texts and to produce natural and accurate translations from Chinese into English. A wealth of relevant illustrative material is presented, taking the reader through a number of different genres and text types of increasing complexity including: technical, scientific and legal texts journalistic and informative texts literary and dramatic texts. Each chapter provides a discussion of the issues of a particular text type based on up-to-date scholarship, followed by practical translation exercises. The chapters can be read independently as research material, or in combination with the exercises. The issues discussed range from the fine detail of the text, such as punctuation, to the broader context of editing, packaging and publishing translations. Major aspects of teaching and learning translation, such as collaboration, are also covered. Thinking Chinese Translation is essential reading for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of Chinese and translation studies. The book presents a range of theoretical and practical approaches to the teaching of the twin professions of interpreting and translating, covering a variety of language pairs. All aspects of the training process are addressed - from detailed word-level processing to student concerns with their careers, and from the setting of examinations to the standardisation of marking. The articles show very clearly the strengths and needs, the potential and vision of interpreter and translator training as it exists in countries around the world. The experience of the authors, who are all actively engaged in training interpreters and translators, demonstrates the innovative, practical and reflective approaches which are proving invaluable in the formation of the next generation of professional translators and interpreters. While many of them are being trained in universities, they are being prepared for a life in the real world of business and politics through the use of authentic texts and tools and up-to-date methodology.

This volume brings together research on a variety of paratextual and peritextual elements of translation of German, Chinese and Czech source texts. The explication seen as necessary to translated texts is a part of this growing field, as researchers investigate the influence of writing which purports to help the reader’s understanding of a text. The articles included here demonstrate the impact of paratextual and peritextual elements on the way a text is produced and received. Publishers, both consciously and unconsciously, may manipulate the presentation of a text to appeal to a certain readership, while writers of prefatorial, explanatory and critical material base their paratextual interpretation on their own perceptions and political leanings. The articles in the volume focus on significant literary texts, by writers such as Christa Wolf and Mao Zedong. Regional novels of Taiwan, modern and traditional poetry, and children’s stories are not exempt from the power of paratext, and some genres, such as the literary mystification texts published in the Czech Republic, are purposefully designed to mislead the reader. The articles in the volume help to dispel the notion that translation and the paratext which surrounds it, and of which it is a part, are innocent.
