Infection is a common clinical condition that may cause local inflammation but, in some cases, can lead to systemic inflammation, with sepsis and organ dysfunction. Septic shock is a condition of inadequate tissue perfusion and cellular use of oxygen due to the cytotoxic action of bacterial toxins. There is no relationship between the pathological characteristics and the severity of the primary septic outbreak and the development of septic shock, and the time that elapses until the start of the shock is not predictable. Thus, knowledge of the pathophysiology of septic shock is fundamental for treatment. This book presents a comprehensive overview of infectious agents and their therapeutic control, pathological conditions with infective etiology such as diabetic foot osteomyelitis and infections in neurosurgery, and the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of sepsis.

Sepsis is a very complex clinical condition that can be considered the central point of the infectious process: the arrival point in the evolution of a localized septic outbreak that has caused a systemic inflammatory reaction. In the clinical setting two important questions regarding the transition from local inflammation, with beneficial effect, to systemic inflammatory disease, with deleterious results, remain unanswered. First, why does the transition from local to systemic disease only occur in some subjects? Second, how long does this transition take? This book attempts to answer these questions. Gastrointestinal stomas constitute an evident anatomical modification, but their perception by patients represents a serious and unacceptable alteration of the body schema. Esophagostomy, gastrostomy, and jejunostomy are usually temporary, but ileostomy and colostomy are permanent in many cases. Two purposes characterize the two types of intestinal stomas: to divert intestinal content and to allow enteral nutrition. The purpose of the stoma in the therapeutic program is surrounded by many misunderstandings and this notice given by surgeons is horrifying to patients. This book pays great attention to the care of the stoma and its therapeutic role, but overall the need is to prevent diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for this surgical alteration to the body's anatomy.
