This case study of the translation of contemporary German literature in Britain and France seeks to address the philosophical and anthropological problem of otherness and to discover its significance for translation theory. This work should appeal to scholars interested in German, British, and French literature, translation theory, philosophy and sociology. central component of the translation process. Moreover, via disciplines, such as philosophy and anthropology, otherness in the last two decades has entered Western theories and studies of translation and become an important analytical and normative category in the field of translation studies. Nevertheless, there is an apparent lack of research considering the concept itself as well as its history and current use in the field and its relevance for the practice of translation. the translation theories currently known as 'foreignizing' and shows that some of these draw on the same nationalist agenda that they try to transcend. Moreover, the ensuing case study proves that current translation practice is still governed by a nationalist assurance of linguistic and cultural differences. This book therefore concludes by calling for a change of perspective in the theoretical and practical approaches to translation. Translation should no longer be regarded as a means of delimiting our selves from a national other, but as a way to uncover the otherness underlying these alleged selves.

Migration is a classical transversal matter that fosters research in a variety of disciplines. Interdisciplinary exchange, however, is rare. The Yearbook on Migration and Integration Research contributes to filling this gap by documenting the issues and results of Austrian research in this field on a regular basis. The contributions in the present first volume discuss both classical topics, such as asylum, citizenship and discrimination, and more recent aspects such as the European care labour market, sham marriages or the importance of migration for the media and art. Specific sections provide insight into recent theoretical and methodological apporaches and broach the question how research results can be translated into practice. One of the most important challenges concerning the future of the European Union is the demographic reproduction of the European population. Decreasing birth-rates and the retirement of the baby boomers will dramatically reduce the labour force in the EU, which will entail not only a lack of manpower but also lower contributions to European social systems. It seems clear that the EU will have to counterbalance this population decrease by immigration in the coming years. Migration Between the Middle East, North Africa and Europe takes this challenge as a point of departure for analysing the MENA region, in particular Morocco, Egypt and Turkey, as a possible source of future migration to the European Union.
