One of the oldest phenomena in the history of mankind is migration, whether peaceful or violent, voluntary or forced, barely noticeable outfl ow or mass movements. In the 19th century, regional migration to frontier territories, as for example in the Russian Empire or the United States of America, was a natural object of research. In the 1960s there was renewed interest in migration history in Western Europe due to the increase of immigration. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the so-called Eastern Bloc, the history of borders came again into focus, leading to a new generation in migration history. This development was reinforced by the "summer of migration" of 2015. The history of migration to Austria, especially during the Second Republic, has long been a topic overlooked by historians, but received increased attention since the 1980s. The present volume presents research currently being done on the history of migration to or through Austria.

"Osteuropa vom Weltkrieg zur Wende" deals with formerly neglected aspects of political and cultural history and the history of everyday life and mentalities in Eastern Europe from World War II to 2000. Starting with an essay on the shifting identities of ethnic minorities in the pre-war era, this volume traces the rise of communist rule, its ways of governing, and its crises and aftermath. In 18 methodologically differentiated chapters based on recently discovered documents, the book analyses the political and personal consequences of ethnic, social, and economical change. It also describes structures built up under communist rule, such as the cooperation between East European secret services and the relations between the Kremlin and foreign communist parties.

Dieses Buch gilt seit langem als das Standardwerk zur Entstehungsgeschichte des Staatsvertrags vom 15. Mai 1955. Der Vertrag hat zehn Jahre nach der Proklamation von Österreichs Unabhängigkeit gemeinsam mit der Neutralitätserklärung zum Ende der Ost-West-Besetzung Österreichs geführt und Österreichs wirkliche Selbständigkeit errichtet. Nunmehr präsentieren Gerald Stourzh und Mitautor Wolfgang Mueller, Professor für Russische Geschichte an der Universität Wien, das Werk in stark revidierter und neuerlich erweiterter Form, auch mit einem neuen Titel. Neu einbezogen wurden zahlreiche weitere Akten aus Moskauer Archiven wie dem Stalin- und dem Molotov-Nachlass und Fachliteratur der letzten Jahrzehnte. Damit konnten in früheren Auflagen offen gebliebene Fragen beantwortet werden. Kein anderes Werk zum Thema erreicht die Fülle des hier verarbeiteten Quellenmaterials.
