This is the new edition of the WHO laboratory manual which incorporates recent developments in procedures and techniques useful to small laboratories in developing countries. It provides a practical guide to the safe and accurate performance of basic laboratory techniques and identifies simple, economical procedures that can yield accurate results with limited resources in hot, humid climates. Issues covered include: the use of a microscope and laboratory balances, centrifugation, measurement and dispensing of liquids, cleaning and sterilisation of equipment, disposal of laboratory waste, dispatch of specimens to reference laboratories and laboratory safety; examining different specimens for helminths, protozoa, bacteria and fungi, and techniques for the preparation, fixation and staining of smears; the examination of urine, cerebrospinal fluid and blood, including techniques based on immunological and serological principles.

Manual of Basic Techniques for a Health Laboratory

This is the third edition of this manual which contains updated practical guidance on biosafety techniques in laboratories at all levels. It is organised into nine sections and issues covered include: microbiological risk assessment; lab design and facilities; biosecurity concepts; safety equipment; contingency planning; disinfection and sterilisation; the transport of infectious substances; biosafety and the safe use of recombinant DNA technology; chemical, fire and electrical safety aspects; safety organisation and training programmes; and the safety checklist.

Each year approximately 200,000 million women become pregnant in developing countries, and more than 500,000 will die of pregnancy related causes. These midwifery modules have been developed in response to the need for education materials to facilitate the teaching of midwifery skills required to respond to the major causes of maternal death. They are intended primarily for in-service training programmes for midwives and nurse mid-wives, but can also be used in basic and post basic midwifery programmes.

WHO and UNICEF jointly developed this global strategy to focus world attention on the impact that feeding practices have on the nutritional status, growth and development, health, and thus the very survival of infants and young children. The strategy is the result of a comprehensive two-year participatory process. It is based on the evidence of nutrition's significance in the early months and years of life, and of the crucial role that appropriate feeding practices play in achieving optimal health outcomes. The strategy is intended as a guide for action; it identifies interventions with a proven positive impact; it emphasizes providing mothers and families the support they need to carry out their crucial roles, and it explicitly defines the obligations and responsibilities in this regards of governments, international organizations, and other concerned parties.
