Tough to rate this. 

On one hand, as my first Le Carre, I loved the characterisation, the deftness, the clash between old and new rules. 

On the other, it just seemed a little .... contrived. Not so much the story, but it felt like a contractual obligation to have one last beano with his characters, and to pass comment on modern times. Witness the little jibe about Brexit, in the last few pages, to get a feel for the niggles that sabotage what would have been a 4.

Characters pass through the story too quick, and the ending feels a little cheap and almost half-hearted. It’s a shame as the pacing and ideas are hard to fault. That said, it’s piqued my interest to read some of his vintage works for comparison, so that’s a good thing.
