I'm not exactly sure what it is about Chevalier's books that leave me wondering how to put my thoughts and feelings into words. I think it might be the simplicity of her stories - the fact that most of the scenes she writes don't seem to be leading anywhere monumental or trying to teach a lesson but simply represent what it was like to live during a different time.

A quote from another reviewer on the back cover of the book makes this point more eloquently, "Chevalier's signature talent lies in bringing alive the ordinary day-to-dayness of the past."

Without a doubt, what keeps me coming back to her books is the thrill of reading stories that are inspired by art. Even when the stories themselves aren't particularly thrilling, there's something intriguing to me about a historically-based, expertly-researched work of fiction that centers on the creation of beautiful art.
