I enjoyed this story but I have to admit that I almost gave up on it several times in the early few chapters. In part I hung in there because I really like the author. I was about 25% into the book on my e-reader before I started to get into the plot.

This book was honestly scarier than the actual horror book I read just before it!! It had my heart pounding at some points. It definitely has an eerie atmosphere, more than I expected, but the circumstances of the book really scared me.

That said, I enjoyed this a lot. Bisexual love triangle? Yes! Relatable main character? Yes! Cute love interests? Yes! Though I will say, Reese started to annoy me a bit by the end. Actually, the whole book started to annoy me by the end. I felt like some things were left unanswered and things were just accepted without explanation? Maybe book 2 will clear up some things.

Overall, it was a fun book! I'm a bit wary about book 2 but I'm curious enough to read it, so we'll see how it goes!

This book is definitely a departure from Lo's other works, but the change of scenery doesn't change her pattern of creating strong and intelligent female characters. This story has everything you could want from a novel: a love story, a coming of age story, and a mystery. All of these thing are woven together in a compelling and interesting way that I haven't seen before. Though some of the sub-plot lines were a bit thin (Reese's father), most of the stories are fleshed out in great detail and, for the most part, come together in the end. Overall another homerun for Lo.

Adaptation gets to the bizarre twisty plot in the story quite fast: there are many plane crashes, believed to be caused by — wait for it — birds. It gives us barely a moment to feel into this plot, before the news feed breaks and our main character is left stranded at the airport with her teacher and another member of their debate team. It’s all very strange, but all very simple and it isn’t long before conspiracy theories start flying; each occurrence setting off a vast chain of tragic and frightening events throughout the country. 

Although the novel can be slow and lacking of detail at times, one of the main issues being it moves too quickly and not always in the good sense, it does have some redeeming qualities. It is unique, in some ways but not wholly — I’ve not read something quite like it, yet. And my personal favorite? Although the novel starts with hints of a romance between the two students on the debate team, Reese and David, it progresses to a same sex relationship after we are introduced to the beautiful, fun and mysterious Amber.

So, to sum up this snippet of a review: mixed feelings on it. I did appreciate the main character being bisexual and the love triangle in it stood out to me because of this. There were a lot of flaws in the novel, but overall it was pretty entertaining and I'd like to know more of the story.
