Empire of black and gold is the first instalment of a high fantasy ten book series with a strange set-up that I went into not knowing much about. 
The world is made of humans with insect characteristics which threw me off a bit. After getting over this aspect, there is nothing not to enjoy about it. 
Great characters? Check.
Intriguing world? Check. 
Amazing plot? Check. 
Lore? Check. 
Adrian Tchaikovsky created a very near perfect fantasy book, in my opinion. I cannot wait to continue in the series.
It is a new favourite.

Pretty cool.

Maybe moments of peril could have been drawn out more. And possibly a bit too many mini-arcs.

I like that a female character can have casual sex and not be narratively punished for it.
