Sometimes it is the journey and not the destination that proves to be more exciting. Dead Man's Folly turned out to be just the case. I enjoyed the set up, the mystery, Poirot's investigation, but the solution left me cold. It was plausible and neatly wrapped up, but seemed rather far-fetched and, dare I say, recycled? Just wasn't my cup of tea.

honestly it was great agatha christie is a favourite of mine and it kept my interest peaked throughout the whole book

Agatha Christie has mystery down to an art at this stage of her writing. Poirot, an eminent and proud detective, is called in to prevent a murder - and ultimately fails as he doesn't know what he should be looking for. Thus ensues a murder, a disappearance, and an accident. 

This book is a great example of Agatha Christie's writing. As a reader, I've always enjoyed trying to pick out the real information from the red herrings and arrive at the end before the detective does. Agatha Christie does a great job of making that difficult - and I love it. I remember seeing a part of the episode starring David Suchet, but I was still left guessing as it had been well over a year since seeing it so I was still left trying to piece together what had happened like all the other readers. Ultimately, I did come to the wrong conclusion. But that's okay! I enjoyed being wrong and seeing what had actually happened. It was a good story.

All in all, I definitely recommend this novel.

Fun fact: the inspiration for Nasse House, in the grounds of which the Folly of the title is located, is Greenway, which was occupied by Christie from 1938 to 1976 and then by her daughter and son-in-law until 2004. Greenway was also the inspiration for Five Little Pigs.

This contains elements of other Christies, which I suppose is inevitable really. Pretty sure the way one character was killed off is exactly the same as one of the victims in Murder is Easy, and am starting to suspect from this and The Body in the Library that Christie didn't like Girl Guides very much. 

Also (though this is hardly Christie's fault, since Nemesis was a later novel), thanks to having read Nemesis some years back, I knew where they'd find one of the bodies. Still, didn't figure out when the murder actually took place or the identity of the killer. All I will say is two of the characters are not all they seem...

PS: Obviously (as is the case for all Christies) I had to reread this immediately...and honestly there are SO MANY CLUES. SO MANY. This is exactly why I love Christie, everything is hidden in plain sight and you can, in theory, figure everything out for yourself.
