A very enjoyable mystery to flex your brain to. I had a correct suspicion of the true murderer, and I thought the identity wasn't veiled as cleverly as in some other Christie's novels, but I could not figure out how the crime was committed and how the evidence fit together. The book ended in one of those confession notes that Christie utilized on several occasions throughout her literary career, which I don't particularly love, but Poirot's red herrings in the final reveal were brilliant and hilarious. Loved every minute of it. Reading a Hercule Poirot novel is like slipping into a pair of favourite cozy slippers and spending an evening with a close friend.

When Lord Edgware Dies a most unnatural death, detective Hercule Poirot must solve a most confounding conundrum: if the obvious killer, the slain peer’s spiteful wife, didn’t do it, who did? A classic from the queen of mystery, Agatha Christie. When Lord Edgware is found murdered the police are baffled. His estranged actress wife was seen visiting him just before his death and Hercule Poirot himself heard her brag of her plan to “get rid” of him. But how could she have stabbed Lord Edgware in his library at exactly the same time she was seen dining with friends? It’s a case that almost proves to be too much for the great Poirot.

This was the best Agatha Christie book I've read this year in 2022 (Not ever because "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Death on the Nile" exist) and I'm going to write why. I've tried to limit my spoilers, but there are still a few so please be aware of this if you choose to read them. 

(view spoiler)[First off, it was engrossing, from the very first page. We learn how Poirot didn't necessarily take credit for the case, and we already know the case has been solved before the story has begun. I like when books start at the end and go back in time. This is incredibly interesting when it comes to a murder mystery as it adds more layers. I also like Poirot's mysteries from Hasting's point of view. Hastings is my favourite of his sidekicks because although he idolises Poirot he still helps solve the case, however unwittingly. 

Second off the characters. They were all interesting and well-developed, which I find essential to a mystery. Even side characters had good development, and you found yourself suspecting everyone, not just the most obvious suspects. 

I also like it when you keep changing your mind, which Christie is always good at. Your mind goes down one path but then it goes on another, and you find yourself second-guessing yourself. I think, to this day, I have never guessed an Agatha Christie book - at least not the whole picture. She is the queen of mystery after all!

As for the murderer themselves, although I don't want to give away too much, I like that they were completely unremorseful. I prefer that to whiny murderers who are sorry for what they did. Sometimes you just need villains who are villains and nothing else. Having said that the villain wasn't necessarily unlikeable. It's nice when their character is complex, it makes it more entertaining - and also impossible to guess who it is. 

Finally, the suspense! I read at a very fast pace anyway, but more so when it comes to suspense. However, I found myself having to slow down towards the end, not because it was less suspenseful, but because I wanted to concentrate more. The reveal is also always one of the best parts of an Agatha Christie book, it helps you pick up on anything you may have missed, and spells everything out for you clearly. Nowadays, reveals are sometimes done slowly and you have to piece them together yourself. I much prefer a Christie reveal since I read fast, so I can finally slow down and don't have to go back in case I missed anything. (hide spoiler)]

So overall I highly recommend this book. However, there is one thing I will point out. The edition I read was a 1978 paperback edition, so there was one word in there that is no longer PC (and never should have been, it's a slur) so just keep that in mind if you pick up a book second-hand. I have enclosed a picture of this edition, so you know the kind of thing to avoid. However, it is highly possible that in reprints it has been taken out or censored, so if you wish to avoid it, just buy a new edition. Waterstones released a line of books printed in a vintage style but printed now, if you still want a vintage-looking book but want to avoid this one word (it was only used once).



Apart from my one grievance, which I can only put down as a result of the book being written in 1938, I think this book is for all mystery fans. Christie has delighted generations for many years, and I think she always will. You don't have to ignore her mistakes, but instead, acknowledge them, and realise where she went wrong, but understand it was a different time. Her work is still relevant today for a reason, and I hope it goes on to be relevant. We can't move on from the past without acknowledging our mistakes or we would never learn. That being said, you do not have to read this if you don't want to.

So I would have rated this higher were it not for the fact that Ms Christie, a woman I strongly suspect had no Jewish, non-white or queer friends to stop her making questionable representation choices, made way too many references to Jewish stereotypes the whole way through this book. Why?

It's a shame, because the story is so good (although I did guess the main twist fairly early on).

I was 10% into this before I realised I had read it before. It took me a good while because it was a very long time ago.

This unfortunately spoiled me the culprit, as that was the only thing I could remember. But it was nice to try and piece together the “how” and the “why”.

I think it is not one of my favourites for some reason, but still masterfully executed.
