Some of the names and motives were difficult to track (at times), but the pace really worked for me. As the story concluded, I was confused at first, but I found it quite satisfying once all the cards had been laid out (signs of a good whodunit).

An excellent mystery! The Dame has done it again. I could not possibly guess the true villain of the story, but when it's all said and done, everything makes perfect sense. This time Hercule Poirot takes on a case of a young woman, who has been a target of mysterious accidents. Convinced that those were in fact murder attempts, the famous detective plunges headfirst into the world of intrigue, deception, and greed. One of the best Poirot instalments I've read so far.

My favorite Poirot! All the classics: Poirot tries to go on vacation, treats Hastings like his favorite pet, an interesting victim & some great twists that you feel like you should have noticed after the ending is revealed.

This is the 100th book I've read this year! Nice.

So for some mysterious reason (cough, Whateverathon, cough) I fell behind on my Christie reading challenge for 2021 last month but with this I have now read what should have been my June pick (the theme was stories featuring a garden and I'd already read the suggestion, Nemesis).

As always, I read this twice. Normally I do this once to find out whodunit and once to look for the clues, but I pretty much immediately guessed the identity of the murderer and then spent the rest of the book being annoyed it was so obvious, so the reread this time was more to see if it improved on a reread. It did (hence the three stars rather than two), but it's no Three Act Tragedy, that's for sure. 

Wouldn't be my first Christie recommendation to people by a long way (although it's still ahead of Parker Pyne and The Man in the Brown Suit).

I think this book put me in a reading slump as I can't imagine reading another book at the moment (unless it is another with Poirot). And since I am reading Christie's boks in chronological order, and the next one I will have to read as part of a readathon just in the middle of November, I am left with nothing I feel like picking up!
No ok that is way too tragic. I will get over this, but I swear this book was that good.

And the funny thing is, I knew how the culprit was! And also quite a few key plot points. However, that did not take my enjoyment away. I still loved this, and adored seeing Poirot's train of thoughts and realisation.

There is so much I like in here. I love the isolated setting, it all takes place at the house (and in another location), and the characters are a limited number. I like Poirot, of course. I like that it is in the English countryside, and I particularly liked the seaside. I liked the characters, I liked Nick.
I loved the mystery, and even if it was rather simple in the end, I would have never guessed had I not been spoiled.

As for what I disliked, well there is nothing. I find that most of Agatha's books are just flawless to me. I am not sure whether I am a bit biased or they are just that good, but this was such a treat.

There are many mystery authors. But so far I have found none that equal Agatha Christie. I love her books. This particular story features Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings. They are on holiday in the seaside town St. Loo. There they meet the young Miss Nick Buckley, who has just escaped the fourth attempt on her life. Of course Hercule Poirot dedicates his little grey cells to the welfare of Nick and chases the would-be murderer.
Even though I had already seen the movie of the book, featuring David Suchet, I was sometimes led astray during the course of the book. As typical for Agatha Christie the reader gets all the necessary clues, but still it’s a near-impossible thing to figure out the truth before it is revealed. I enjoyed myself from the first page to the last.

Poirot and Hastings are vacationing when they stumble across young Magdala “Nick” Buckley, who reveals she’s survived a few death-defying accidents in the previous days. Poirot’s spidey sense goes off and he quickly comes to find that those accidents weren’t so accidental. Someone wants to off Nick.

Will Poirot be able to follow the clues in time? It’s a fight against the clock that includes inheritances, explorers, and inevitably in a murder mystery, tragedy. Christie delivers an ingenious plot in a tightly written and marvelous novel. This was the first Agatha I read and was hooked right away.

PLEASE I shall positively abandon this quest if this absolute buffoon Hastings continues to narrate so often. A few books back he got married and moved to Argentina and I was so pleased to see him go. But now.....

The only good part of this book is when Poirot tells Hastings one morning that he would be so much easier to look at if only he would part his hair down the middle and not off to the side! And oh why does he insist upon such an inferior mustache? If you can’t have a mustache as bushy and perfect at Poirot... why bother!! 

Why bother indeed. This book could have been fun but there were honestly too many better suspects and the final wrap up was extremely unsatisfying.

A review from my old blog...

While most of Agatha Christie's books are intriguing on their own once many of the books are read a pattern is easily detectable. In fact, most of the Hercule Poirot books have a Sherlock Holmes set up to them. This story was told from the perspective of Captain Hastings, the man to which Poirot confides and uses as a board to bounce his ideas off.

Another thing that I don't like about Christie's books is the fact that the ending is usually something that cannot be detected by even the most casual observation. I have to rephrase that. I caught maybe one or two hints about the ending and the ultimate culprit but too often Christie keeps the reader completely in the dark.

I appreciate Christie's style. She weaves a captivating mystery... albeit unsolvable... without any of the extraneous or I should say gratuitous information that many other authors feel like they have to in order to get people to continue reading their books.

Although I did say a few negative things about the book I do give this book a positive recommendation. it's a good read with only a few points that I simply don't like.

Read a 1938 Collins copy of this. The changes in language in the current Agatha Christie books compared to that edition are quite intriguing to note. As for the plot of the book, Christie doesn't disappoint. I genuinely enjoyed this one.

I saw the ending from a mile away, but not all of the intricacies. 

Christie has a formula, and I have read enough of her books by now that I know it.

Still enjoyable though, and anyone who is not familiar with her twists would be absolutely floored by the reveal of this one.
