This book is basically a masterclass in “you think you know what’s going on?” …and then it immediately proves you wrong. It follows a marriage (and the people orbiting it) where nothing is as stable as it looks from the outside. There are secrets tucked into the everyday, motives hiding behind manners, and that constant low-level feeling that someone is lying; possibly everyone. The story keeps tightening the screws until you’re reading with your eyebrows permanently raised. This was my first Alice Feeney, and it’s not even my usual genre, but… what the actual fuck (affectionately). It’s like: Oh, you didn’t see that twist coming? BOOM, here’s another one. Still standing? BAAM! Another. And another. Feeney is handing out twists like Oprah Winfrey handing out cars. Is it subtle? Not really. Is it wildly entertaining? Absolutely. It’s fast-paced, well-written, and aggressively bingeable, perfect if you want a thriller that refuses to let you feel smug for even five minutes.
