This book really hooked me with its opening chapters. I was really curious to know where the story was going. 

Unfortunately, the story got pretty conventional after that. Just another sort of elder-gods-coming-to earth sort of story. There were some genuinely creepy things going on, but I felt the story got bogged down with too much back story, explanation, & exposition in the middle. 

And I was bemused by the fact that gigantic, pandimensional beings who are so alien and terrifying that the mere sight of them drives ordinary humans instantly insane can still have mommy issues.

If Tana French, and Jonathan Carroll, and H.P. Lovecraft got together for a wild orgy and had a baby-- er, a book -- then that would be this story.

It is a very weird book; in fact, weird enough that it's hard for me to classify it, exactly. Bennett is working with territory that I don't usually deal with, and so it's hard for me to evaluate how well he succeeds -- but he mostly convinced me that he succeeded in what he set out to do, and that it was worth doing. I appreciated the fact that he seemed to me to follow through on the weirdness, and do stuff with it, rather than making it gratuitous weirdness just for flash and show. I thought that he handled the science sufficiently well, too, which is to say that he wrote about it with just enough detail to allow me to suspend disbelief; and avoided the temptation to write massively detailed technobabble to try and force readers to accept the science.

I enjoyed the experience of reading it very much; in fact, I started it yesterday, and wanted to get back to it, and when I started again this morning, I pretty much couldn't put it down.
