Reading "Animal, Vegetable, Junk" has definitely informed my thinking about the interconnectedness of the food system in America, especially how it relates to economic policy. I really appreciated how Bittman was able to cover a wide variety of topics and how they all connected back to how they shaped our modern idea of food and agriculture, from British colonization in Ireland during the potato famine to the Black Panther's free breakfast program. I did find that since there was so much to cover, some really interesting movements or concepts got glossed over or pushed under a vague general point. It could have just been my reading, but I found some of the sentence structures confusing to read, especially when new vocabulary was being added or defined. Overall, however, I feel like I learned a lot about the history of food in America and I definitely need to go back and highlight some very intriguing and interesting statistics mentioned all throughout the book!
