The basic plot has an entire shoal of red herrings. Poor Sandy, and to a lesser degree, Jimmy, end up running around after tenuous lead after lead. Instead, the solution is more basic and more personal — one that is a matter of understanding the motive, rather than understanding individual timelines or alibis.

Red Bones is a similar read to Killer Kung Pao by Vivien Chien (2020) and The Big Nap by Ayelet Waldman (2001).

A solid mystery set on a small UK island. Post-grads turn up some interesting findings in an archeological dig on one of the residents’ land. Then one of them ends up dead. 

So many characters on this small island, it was difficult for me to keep track in the audiobook. Plus I hadn’t read either of the first two in the series, so perhaps some of the personalities would have been more clearly imprinted had I done so. Regardless there is still a lot to like in the settings, the scenery, and the conflicted detectives.

Well, if one can't really travel in real life it's a nice way of "seeing" different parts of the world through their crime fiction - enjoyed the bits about the women knitting and walking - something to look up.

Fairly slow moving to begin with, as her other prior books in the series are. But once one gets to the half way point they tend to pick up. Are all her stories two body mysteries?

I still appreciate the language and colloquialisms she uses.

I enjoyed the character building of Sandy here instead of bringing in outside investigative help.

There were a few places where I felt she was placing distracting information or conveniently leaving things out which have influence on how one views the characters and their motivations versus her plotting as an author.

I'd seen the first half of this TV episode, but apparently missed the ending.
