like Valley of the Lost, Cleeves chose to clue in the readers before Detective Jimmy Perez or any of the other investigators. In both books, this means a change of location to a remote, out of country one. I did have to chuckle at the inclusion of Huddersfield only because of my five year following of Felix, and more recently Bolt, at the railway station.

The book was fun but not as compelling at Raven Black.

Very good. Lots of people to feed the red herring feast, and an interesting off-island component. You can see why she’s popular.

It's a good murder mystery to keep you going, but it's not gripping enough, and some of the characters are a bit annoying. Maybe if I'd have read the first of the Shetland Quartet I would have liked it better.

Well tied up after l after laying things out so beautifully. Bigger on character than actual plot though, so it moved pretty slowly until about 60% of the way through.

I love the setting, though it feels a bit mentally cramped in the Shetland Islands with its small population, compared to the Northumberland setting of the Vera Stanhope series. Jimmy Perez knows everyone and has connections to everyone. His colleagues aren’t as compelling as Vera’s.  I’m not sure how long I’ll stay engaged, despite loving the TV series.
