Points in favor of this book: it was a really quick read. not including sleeping or eating, I read it in abot six hours.

Pints NOT in favor of this book: it was really, really... lame. Especially for being titles RISE... it kinda fell flat. 

(view spoiler)[allthough, end of last book, Eve and Calebin the hangar, who made an offhand comment about how sucky it would be (for Charles, especially) if she got pregnant? I did! And then, whaddya know? It turns out that night in the hangar actually DID get her pregnant! (hide spoiler)]

Anyway, this book, I mean, it was a'ight. I wasn't really a BIG fan of the series. I mean, after reading the first book I put the next two on hold at the library and obviously read them. But still... 
I do think the first couple of books were better than this one.

WHAT KIND OF ENDING WAS THAT?

the ending had absolutely no kind of resolution. I mean, Caleb was not in this book. AT ALL. (view spoiler)[ I know, I know, he 'died' at the end of book 2, but come on, who seriously bought that? And then I read some reviews and intentionally spoiled myself tat he was alive, which you might be doing as well. HE IS ALIVE. HE IS NOT PRESENT IN THIS BOOK, HOWEVER. (hide spoiler)] Really disappointed in the lack of resolution there.

THis book sort of felt like there was no plot. I mean, the first quarter (view spoiler)[when they're plotting to kill her father (hide spoiler)] I liked; if the author had made that be a larger element in the story, it would've been good. Political intrigue and takeovers and discord. if the author had stayed there, where all that was happening, this book probably would've been at least five times betterthan it was. instead, just when stuff was getting good there, the author took our main characters and sent them on a journey simmilar to that which they went on in book 1. Except LESS STUFF happened in that journey the second time around. And then, as soon as they got there, our MC turned right around and went back to the city and when she go there, the fun stuff was pretty much ending.

(view spoiler)[Also, was I supposed to feel sorry about what happened with Pip? I had to read that section twice because the first time, I didn't understand what actually happened. Then, the second time I read it, I was like: "Oh. She died." not caring. (hide spoiler)]

Anyway, major disappointment. The author, I believe made some bad choices concerning the plot and the chaacters in this book.

I must say, I devoured this series. Luckily, because I started Eve only a few days ago, I didn't have to wait for the next books in the series.

Rise picks up after Eve marries Charles and Caleb is killed. Needless to say, the book was significantly less enjoyable without Caleb in it, which warrants the three star rating. The memories of his times with Eve mentioned throughout the book were not enough to make me feel he had a presence in it. However, (view spoiler)[I had a feeling since the very beginning that Caleb was actually alive. I've learned not to trust books that don't show a character sans a heartbeat. Chances are, they're waiting in the curtains for their grand re-entrance. *cough* Delirium *cough* (hide spoiler)]. 

So, maybe I judge books a little too harshly on their love stories. I can't help it. I'm a teenager, I dream. (view spoiler)[It provided a little comfort knowing Eve was pregnant with Caleb's baby, (and despite her believing it was a little girl, I was always convinced it would have been a boy). (hide spoiler)] Suffice to say, the writing was just as great as it had been in the first two books. The character development was great. In particular, I loved Arden and Eve's relationship, not just in the final novel, but in all three. They've both saved each other. And it wasn't rushed, or unrealistic. I felt it was genuine. 

I also loved Charles. I loved that he surprised me. You'd think a rich kid working for the king, living in a luxurious city for most of his life, would develop a superiority complex. At first I thought that maybe he was putting up a front to Eve before they got married. He had to have a flaw, right? Maybe he was abusive when she disobeyed, or was actually in love with Clara too (which is sort of what I'd hoped for). In the end, he turned out to be sincere in his feelings for Eve; defending her, protecting her. He was a sensitive character who was hurt by Eve's resistance to how he felt. If I wasn't so in love with Caleb, I would have wanted her to be with Charles.

I'm so happy we got to see Silas and Benny again, although the reunion wasn't quite what I'd hoped. They were two of my favourite characters in Eve , and their goodbye left me in tears. That being said, I did feel some indifferent feelings toward Ruby and Pip. I feel they didn't really move the plot forward. I felt nothing when (view spoiler)[Pip died, (hide spoiler)]. I wished we'd seen more of Arden and not so much of them.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this series to anyone. It has great world building, lovable characters, heartbreaking moments. I've grown to really love dystopian novels. It's extremely difficult, jarring even, to read one right after another, as you are ripped out of one world to the next. This series made the transition easy. All three books are quick reads. 

On that note, WHAT WAS THAT ENDING?? Again, a lacklustre reunion (UHM NO REUNION WE GET TO SEE). I wanted to see how (view spoiler)[Caleb would react to the baby, how Eve would react to the loss of the use of his legs, how they would fall into each others arms because it'd been months and they only loved each other more. I wanted to see the baby, I wanted to see Caleb hold the baby, (hide spoiler)] THERE WASN'T EVEN AN EPILOGUE.

Okay. Just read it.

UPDATE:

I hate to be the person, because an author so rarely picks up a series after it's finished just because the readers want them to, and Anna Carey gave us the epilogue we were all desperate for. But i can't help but be a little disappointed. I said I wanted an epilogue, but I guess what I really wanted was a little more specific. I wanted a reunion. I wanted to Eve to fall into Caleb's arms and cry and kiss him because I'm cheesy like that. The epilogue we got just left me with more questions.
 
Anna Carey, you're amazing. Thanks for hearing your fans and giving us what we asked for. I just wish it had been a little more satisfying.
