I loved this! I knew nothing going into this book, I actually found an ARC at goodwill and picked it up but I loved it. It was a quick, easy read that really had you looking into the minds of this dysfunctional family and how their dynamic worked. Some characters I hated, some I loved, there was easy connections made. Overall, a great Sunday afternoon read.

Nothing too incredible to write home about, but I enjoyed the complex female characters. Nice to read a frontier story where the women aren't either withering violets or hearty uberdames. These women were flawed and complicated. The men were a bit more prosaic, but that's okay :)

Might have only been two stars but the Northern California setting, especially the Calaveras big trees, gets an extra star all its own. Made me very nostalgic for home.
