This was an interesting concept... And I thought the characters were good...
I just didn't love it.

The writing style could have used some improvement, but I was already familiar with her writing style so that didn't really bother me too much... I just thought it was somewhat slow up until about 150 pages in.

I do appreciate the fact that it's not a trilogy, because I really hate that almost every author these days feels the need to make book into trilogies when everything could be summed up in just one or two books.

Overall, I think this was an enjoyable book, for the most part, but it was the best book ever, by any means.

I liked this book a lot, but still not as much as Matched. It was good, with great ideas and a captivating plot, but I felt like a lot of characters were underdeveloped and everything happened to quickly. But it's definitely worth a read.

Set within a civilization that lives deep beneath the sea, twin sisters, Rio and Bay, are about to make the most important decision of their lives. Will they choose to stay Below, sacrificing their soul but living in happiness, or to go Above, keeping their soul but living in weakness and misery. No one could have predicted their choice.

I originally picked up this book because it had been sitting on my shelf for so long so I just had to read it. But I ended up being pleasantly surprised. However I am torn as to how to rate this book, because I have the feeling like I enjoyed reading it but I can’t seem to have a wholly logical reason for why. (Maybe it’s because I read fast? So it didn’t feel slow? I have no clue.)

I can’t exactly pinpoint what it was about this book that touched my heart, maybe it was being I related with the main character so much. The novel begins in a place where Rio, the protagonist, is immediately abandoned by her sister and feels alone. However, over time she finds that no one really abandoned her.

Normally it is a turn off when a book begins with the character being an orphan, but her mother’s death was an important plot point, and her father’s death was barely mentioned. So for once, the orphan trope didn’t cause me to pull out my hair with annoyance.

The think that makes or breaks a book is the ending, and as someone who loves to know the answers to every single small question I have about subplots, it was surprising that I liked this ending. Of course there was a romance element to the book, this is YA I’m reading, but the epilogue was more about her sister and that’s why I loved it. This story was more of a tale about family and trust than about the ‘long lost city of Atlantis’. In fact, there is no mention of mermaids.

If I had to answer the question as to why I liked this book my answer would be it’s simplicity. Never was there a point where I thought it waste of time to be reading a particular portion of a chapter. (Except for the racing subplot, like other than spending time with True, it did literally nothing.) I loved the pure, true theme of Atlanta.

(But after reading the second two books of Condie’s Matched trilogy, I did not have high expectations when reading this book.)

The writing was okay, although I have to agree with other reviewers, it could do with more description of surroundings. The plot was unique, but on the same hand, hard to comprehend at times. At the end the whole book left me with a feeling of confusion, but I still enjoyed it. I guess I'm neutral.

I liked the idea behind the novel. I liked where Ally Condie went with the story, but I have to say I don't think I am a huge fan of her work. Between this novel and the Matched series, I feel her ideas are solid but she doesn't take me where I want to go with them. I'm left upset with where she has taken her amazing story line.
