In the last year or so, I started to hear Brené Brown's name, but still wasn't familiar with her work. The library recently recommended several books about taking it easy, and two of her books were on the list. I listened to the author narrate her book, and found her voice easy to listen to. Her stories and anecdotes throughout the book were relatable, and I appreciated her ideas. I look forward to reading more of her work.

I am not sure why I approached 'Rising Strong' with expectations. That was out of character for me. Maybe because I saw Brene Brown's name being dropped by Cheryl Strayed and Elizabeth Gilbert quite often, I presumed that I would fall in love with Brown's books too. I could't do well with the boom.

Brown delivered some great lessons. Some life-changing perspectives. But they were all so sporadically offered that I had to wade through her ocean of academic research notes to unearth that one piece of dashing advice. As I read Brown's prosaic anecdotes and mind-numbing data points, the wait became an exercise in patience. I don't hate the book. That feeling is strong. I only wish that it could have been more personal, and the writing could have been warmer. It had a powerful title. It was replete with inspiring quotes and lyrics. But its heart was missing.

Sometimes the right book makes its way to you just in time for when you need it. This is such a book. So much of what she said about judgement, people doing the best they can, setting boundaries, integrity etc. resounded with what is going on and the issues people are facing at the moment.

I've become a bit of a sucker for Brene Brown, I love how she defines and breaks down all the fuzziness around spirituality, the need for acceptance, handling guilt and shame, etc. Listening to this audio thing, more like a recording of a workshop, was a magnificent way to reflect on these important topics. 

Yes, Brene Brown has a pretty privileged life and some of her examples may seem like trivial problems compared to other struggles people have, but the insights she shares are powerful and I'm strongly enriched by her sharing these.

From this in particular: 
* Shitty First Drafts: that story you first tell yourself that is really blowing everything out of proportion. Write it down and examine it. 
* Compassion and empathy: the difference and how to improve (and why) at both. 
* Assuming everyone is doing the best they can: why this is not only likely true, but even if it isn't we are better off by believing that it is. 
* Over and under functioning during high anxiety times.

And much more.

I liked this ~almost as much as Daring Greatly, which is very high praise. It needs to stand on the shoulders of Daring Greatly, but not in a bad way. This is the next step of the Daring Greatly process. When you're facedown in the arena - when you've been brave and failed - that's when you need Rising Strong. 

I really love the Reckoning, Rumble, and Revolution. I love how applicable the system is for every possible disappointment, failure, or discomfort in any area of our lives. The "story I'm making up" concept is seriously a game-changer, and I want to tell everyone about it constantly. Great read. Another awesome book by Brene Brown.

While Daring Greatly focuses on vulnerability, Rising Strong takes a look at this too, but adds on compassion, curiosity, love, generosity and more as a route to happiness and integrity. A few months out I can't say I remember much about this book verbatim, but my Myers Briggs did change from "Thinking" to "Feeling", so I think it had a bigger impact than I can put into words.

The work Brené Brown has done and is doing regarding vulnerability and shame is indispensable to our society. If you want to be even a half-functioning human, please read her book(s). I cannot overstate how important her work is.
