This was a really nice read. I was looking for something new in my fantasy-reading and thus found this book and thought “Phoenix Detective - neat!”.

The story is fast paced and flows quite nicely. There is not too much world building but really what more is there to know other that that we are in London, Emma is a detective in training, there’s crimes happening and also Vampires, Werewolves and as of yet to be determined other supernatural beings exist?

Emma is a great protagonist. I really got the sense that she actually thought for herself and didn’t come off as dumb at all (as many others tend to do).
Likewise the investigation seemed reasonable and was easy enough to follow along - even if I did guess the ultimate outcome. But in my opinion that just further shows a good set-up of the events leading up to it.

It’s not world-shatteringly amazing but optimal for a quick and entertaining read with fun fantasy and smart detective-ing. 😋

Although it wasn’t suggested at all as of the end of this book - I’m 99,9% sure that Emma is a Phoenix but I am interested to see how she’ll find out and if it means she’ll never die - or if it’s limited uses.

For that reason I am reasonably excited to continue reading this story and to also find out if Lukas will take on a bigger role in future installments as well. 😏

Solid 3 stars. I liked it. Entertaining, even if somewhat predictable. Guess I'm just familiar with Helen Harper's style. Going to continue with the series.
