Smog covers most of the world, killing biodiversity and starting major food insecurity. The story doesn’t focus on the climate change element though, it follows one chef to a private funded atop a mountain. It’s seductive, decadent and pleasurable. (I’ve seen other reviews say the extended descriptions of food gets a bit dreary but I liked it, adds to the self-indulgence.) Seductive in its study of morality, the pushing of the main character’s boundaries and her culpability. I like that the characters are morally complex, in certain lights they look like saints, in others, evil.

I was drawn to this book by its description about dystopian future where crop fails and animals are no longer roaming the world. What happen to us humans? While Bazterrica wrote about consuming other human, Zhang still have faith in humanity that our daily staple was converted into some sort of artificial food made of mung beans.

The main character (I don't think we know her name, only that she's Korean American who moved to Europe to get a job as a chef in a restaurant while the mysterious catastrophic event happened, making her unofficially trapped in Europe and couldn't return to US while countries around her are buckling down in debt, and hunger.

So when she was offered a job to work as a chef in a restaurant on top of Italian mountain, catering the rich, with access to the lost treasures of animal flesh and extinct vegetables, she said yes.

I understand that this book wants to bring up the discussion about morality, about what would the rich people do, do we have some sort of moral code when everything goes to sh**? Do we just nod along and trying to grapple with the flow, or would we be able to stand for what we earlier stood for?
.
However, I feel this book has too long monologues, discussions that I find it irrelevant, making it in the end as a bore, but the book however gives insight of what could have happened with humanity if everything went wrong.
