The whole apocalypse theory was strange and unexpected from a YA book. At first I thought it was a mystery, then fantasy, alien, dystopian... anything but apocalypse. The friendship between Daisy and Henry seemed so unlikely, and how Henry kept his secrets was just impossible. The way he lured her to the campground seemed less friendly and more like a trap. I was glad it didn't focus on romance, because that would just be unrealistic in this setting. One thing that bothered me is when Daisy was in quarantine, and she didn't know where she was or what was going on, yet she acted completely normal. She took stock of everything she had and just figured someone would come save her, and reminded herself to stay positive because no way was she getting out if she wasn't optimistic. Yet, she made no effort to escape. She switched a latch and locked herself in. She didn't try to dig a hole out or pick the lock or find power tools or SOMETHING. And even after she took inventory and figured out how long her food would last her, she went and made mosaic art out of beans!! Instead of trying to save herself, she just acted out.<br />Then there was that weird part where the Dunkles went all Donald Trump on Daisy for being half-Mexican. And Henry's parents half-heartedly tried to defend her. <br />I'd hoped this book would be eye-opening about a community of preppers and that Daisy would make her escape because they ARE TOTALLY CRAZY but it was a complete disappointment. The characters were weak, and the relationship between them was unbelievable- simply because they "always had been" friends. The weirdness of their possible romantic relationship made me dislike them even more. The ending was abrupt and totally spoiled the whole plot buildup. But also, I was like thank god this is over.<br />I saw in another review that this book had "an identity crisis" and that is completely right. Overall, so much promise, so little fulfillment.
