Sweet Honey

Honey's book was one of the reasons why I started reading the chocolate box girls series, I was so sure I would love her and completely understand her, and in the end I did, but it took time to get there

In the start I found it difficult to connect with Honey, it felt hypocritical to view her as someone who had been hurt without even acknowledging that she had hurt others just the same

I am still not sure if it was due to my mood that I couldn't get into the start of the book as much as I wanted to, or if it was because of my expectations? Maybe a bit of both

However once I did get into the book, it was definitely worth it to read her story. 

With Honey there were bits and pieces that I could relate to and understand, her rage and defense mechanism to always thinking she's a problem and that everyone else views her the same, to feel like people just push you away because you're too much to handle, always leaving without even knowning why they left in the first place 

The idealization she had of her father, how his love sometimes felt better than anything else she'd ever known.. even when there were others that was always there for her, throughout her life they were there, always supporting her, helping her, but she never really noticed how much they were there and how little he was in her life

It inflicted a lot of pain onto her when she realized that he wasn't who she thought he was, and yet she couldn't help but love him just the same

"we can't choose who we love" This will always be something I stand by, you really can't choose who you love, when you first attaches yourself to someone and love them with your whole heart, nothing can ever make you let go, even when they've let you down

The cyberbullying that Anthony had inflicted onto Honey was cruel and damaging, but I still couldn't hate him, I could understand that the pain of being used, hurt, just thrown away when he wasn't needed anymore must have been incredibly hurtful. 

Sometimes the pain turns into anger and you can't stop the rageing storm inside, hurt people hurt people. 

In the end Honey saw how the pain she had unintentionally inflicted onto others could send them over the edge. Just like it had done to her when her father had left her.

Grace O'Callaghan

** spoiler alert **
           Probably my favourite in the series, we follow Honey after the events of ‘Coco Caramel’ as she moves to Australia to live with her Dad. A fresh start. But can she run away from her past?

Really enjoyed the setting of Australia. Although I love Somerset, it was nice to have a change of scenery.

Honey is probably my favourite character in this series. I feel like she’s the most complex character and she really grew up and learnt her lesson in this book. It was a ‘boy who cried wolf’ situation where Honey realises that despite turning over a new leaf, her past actions have consequences and you have to really prove that you’ve changed. It also took living with her Dad to see that he’s not the hero of the story and that he actually did some pretty terrible things. 
Also loved Ash, not much to say about him, he’s just a really nice guy and sees past Honey’s many facades.

This was also definitely the most interesting plot out of all the books so far. There was a sweet little romance, family drama, and cyber bullying which were all great plots. I felt this book conveyed a clear message to young readers that whilst the Internet can be a wonderful place, you have to use it wisely and carefully.

Overall, my favourite in this series. I still couldn’t give it more than 3 stars as I don’t think it’s that original or special. But it did have a good message and the target audience would probably love it.

This book is a must read if you are interested in Cathy Cassidys work. It is beautifully written and an exciting, shocking sequel to the other chocolate box girls books.
