La prima parte del libro sembrava promettere molto bene, più delle tre stelline che alla fine sono stata costretta a dargli. 
Il ritmo della storia era più frenetico e la trama più imprevedibile ma poi si è tutto sgonfiato un pò. Il finale era fin troppo facile da indovinare, e se c'è una cosa che proprio non mi va giù in un libro è un finale prevedibile (chiamarlo finale forse è un parola grossa, dato che in realtà un vero e proprio finale neanche c'è visto che la narrazione viene troncata di botto sul più bello). 
Libro carino comunque, per passare qualche ora ma niente di speciale.

I picked this up from a book sale and must have paid a dollar (or just 20 ruppees here) for it. I mostly took it because of its cover and vague blurb. 
It was worth so much more.
I have never read something so simple yet mystifyingly intriguing.

But old superstitions die hard and soon Mary finds that she, like her grandmother, is the victim of ignorance and stupidity, and once more she faces important choices to ensure her survival. With a vividly evoked environment and characters skilfully and patiently drawn, this is a powerful literary achievement by Celia Rees that is utterly engrossing from start to finish.
