Whenever I haven't read a Stephen King book in awhile, my love for him seems less tangible and harder to articulate. I remember that some of his stories are the greatest books I've ever read, but the intense impact of his characters and stories fade over time. I read "Under the Dome" and "Cell" back to back. Both of these stories reaffirmed for me that King is an amazing storyteller; he is the Mark Twain of our time. He crafts his characters carefully, fully fleshing them out with their actions, words, and the subtleties of their non-verbal communication. 

In an interview, King said that he likes putting ordinary people in extraordinary situations. His characters are real people not some fantasy version of a human. You feel that connection with his characters because his narrative puts you in the action. You are experiencing what the characters are feeling - their anxiousness, their emptiness, their joy, their confusion. 

"Cell" was very reminiscent of other King books in which a group of strangers comes together under extraordinary circumstances; the use of current technology makes these circumstances even more frightening. You might think that the bringing strangers together thing is a formulaic crutch of a tired writer, but King does it with masterful skill. You are glad he brought them together. They needed to be together; it just makes sense. You cheer for these characters despite their flaws. Without even noticing it, King has woven a great story and shown you the best (and worst) humanity has to offer.

I felt like this was different to a lot of other Stephen King books that I have read. Something about the style felt very like Cujo. It was a good read that had me glued to it from the first chapter.

           Cell by Stephen King

This in time will become a classic King novel, and is socially appropriate. Those affected are so because of the use of their mobile phones, hence the title. It's a good story, with characters that you care about. My only criticism is the ending, as usual, King doesn't wrap up all the loose ends, leaving things open for the reader to make their own minds up. After spending such a long time invested in a novel, I would like it to all be resolved.

I really love Stephen King, and was recommended this one by my Father. I was drawn in by the premise and the return of his fast-paced writing style that I haven't seen for a while. Maybe it was because I recently read It, which took me a while to get through, but something about this book fell flat and was almost draining. The characters only seemed to reach their full depth and potential every now and then throughout the novel, and Clay was the one I truly connected with because he seemed so disturbed about finding his son. Other than that, Alice, Tom and Jordan didn't have much depth to them, and I was shocked to find that Alice was fifteen after she passed away. This is a little incoherent but yeah essentially the pace wasn't for me. I will be picking up another King book in the future however, and still think of him as the greatest.
