There was nothing about this book that I found exciting...or intriguing...or anything else that would have made it stand out as a "good" book. It has all the necessary components to be called a story, but that's about it.

Four and a half stars actually, really very good. Watched the movie and was completely pissed. No wonder it failed at the box office despite the star power involved (I mean Idris Elba and Kate Winslet, what more could you ask for?). It failed because they stripped all the emotional/romantic heft that was present in the book and left a weak, anemic story behind... honestly. such potential wasted. Book highly recommended.

I'm torn between 1 and 2 stars. The book had some ok and even funny moments, but overall it was just... bad. I'm very disappointed, because it was recommended to me, so I expected something great to happen till the last pages, but it never did. 

So the book tells a survival story of two almost-strangers whose plane crashed in the mountains in winter. Thank god one of them is ridiculously well-prepared for the occasion. Not only is he a doctor (whose speciality is exactly what happens to be needed after the other character breaks her leg), his hobby also happens to be mountain-climbing and he has all of his equipment and meds with him. Convenient. 

But my main problem with this book is the female character, Ashley. She is just completely useless and spends the whole book lying down. But ok, even when lying down, maybe she had some good ideas about what to do in their situation? Or she made at least like one decision, that influenced the plot? Nope. She is just there so the main character has someone to take care of. Oh, and also so they can BOTH complain, several times, that her legs aren't shaved! Oh no! The are near to starving and in the mountains about a month, and she didn't shave her legs?! How dare she. 

Unfortunately, the rest of the book isn't much better. The "plot twist" is predictable, the plot itself is quite simple ("we have to go down the mountain and survive") and as for the writing itself, you can easily find passages that were written only because the author thought "this is a deep book, I need to make people cry!". 

The only good and believable character was the dog.
