I think these last few books have been considerably better than the middle of the series- There are some things that are irksome (like the continued use of "master" by Toothless and the Wodensfang and basically everything about Snotlout in this book) but, overall, I'm still super enjoying the building narrative a lot. 

I know this is probably a good thing for books designed for young folks, but for these last few books having the epilogue reflections has definitely stolen some of the emotional-high-stakes of the narrative. You know from book 1 that regardless of what happens in these stories Hiccup grows old, and while that didn't bother me at all books 1-8, it definitely has taken away from 9, 10, and 11 having the full impact. It's hard for a cliff hanger to really be impactful when you know homeboy makes it, ya know?
