I'm sorry to say I didn't really rate this. Having read two of Cynthia Lord's books back to back (also Half a Chance) I'd say this is definitely middle to upper elementary rather than YA and compared to books by Pam Munoz Ryan it is just missing depth and complexity. Characters are a little two dimensional and the "problems" are all neatly resolved. Will suit those students and teachers who like their diversity served up in neat simple dishes.
