A fun albeit violent read. Suarez has an excellent knack for action sequences. This book could easily be a great movie.

Loved what it made me think about, however, overall a found it a little bit of a ‘trashy’ read. Not sure yet whether I’ll bother with the remainder of the trilogy.

First off the narration was corny (audiobook complaint). Perhaps it was partly due to the dialogue, but it was also narrated with cartoony exaggerated caricatured voices. I'm not a fan at all. I appreciate that voicing many characters is difficult work, but this was hard to take seriously. Second, there were too many far fetched aspects of the story. I enjoyed the premise of the book, but the details fell flat. AND, the ending had ZERO resolution. I understand cliff-hangers, but throw the reader a bone here. You can't just treat a book ending like a chapter break. 

In addition, reader beware, there is a graphic depiction of drug-induced date rape. Sections of text like this are part of the reason I will not be reading more books by Daniel Suarez. There are just too many adventure/thriller authors that don't add overtly sexual content to their books.

I gave it three stars because I really liked the premise of the story, and I also enjoyed a couple of the characters.

The idea is nice, but you could definitely tell this was the author's first novel. The characters were underdeveloped, and several threads just seemed to be there for no reason. They were never fully wrapped up.

In addition, I still can't figure out if I missed something with the whole (view spoiler)[Sebeck suddenly being put in prison and on death row (hide spoiler)] thing. That seemingly just happened out of thin air with no buildup or clear explanation besides some vague "it was a setup" explanation after the fact. Did the author just get bored and decide to skip over the buildup to this major plot event? 

At some point it started to feel less like a techno thriller and more like a LitRPG, and I wished it had stuck with the former.

Overall though, the idea itself was really interesting, and the tech descriptions did not make me cringe. I won't read the next one in the series right away, but maybe eventually.

Okay, so, working in the Information Technology field I had to suspend my belief quite a bit for this book in regards to what technology can do because a lot of the technology right now is just not plausible.

That said, this book annoyed me for one main reason and that's the lack of a time frame. A "in the soon future" would have been sufficient but it kept trying to be right now and the future at the same time and that's something that just didn't mesh with me.

I mean, lets be honest, a Vietnam vet today assuming they were 18 in 1975 would be 56 today, and I'm not saying that 56 is old, but don't act like someone who is supposed to be in their mid to late 50's is as spry as a 38 year old.

It bugged me, but it was still a good read and I'll probably read the second one eventually.
