Issues concerning the origins of modern humans are dealt with explicitly from the perspective of archaeological evidence drawn from the Levant. The author concludes that the Neanderthals and their contemporaries in the region had, by 100,000 years ago, evolved fully modern cultural behaviors, including linguistic and symbolic capabilities.
