Witness trees, she'd tell them. An old term of trade for trees that marked invisible boundaries. Now also used for those that were present at Important moments in our history. In other words: the ones that witnessed us.

I first listened to the audiobook on a road trip. I don’t usually like audiobooks because you’re getting everything on a bias, but it was masterfully done. I read the novel after enough time had passed that the actor’s voice wouldn’t be in my ear. It’s great either way.

So much has already been said about this book. I don’t know that I have anything new to add. Turning a location into the main character of a story is brilliant. I think other writers have done this before (anything set in a major city does this to an extent), but for a plot of land through generations being the only continuous connection to the reader, it’s just a unique and genuinely exciting experience as a reader.

"North Woods" is, ultimately, a record of history - of a land and of people; ambitious in its concept in spite of what feels like the limited scale to a single locations.

I was originally weary that I may end up finding the novel either difficult to follow in audiobook format or struggling to connect to and really care about any of the characters due to the episodic nature of the narration. I am so glad that I was wrong.

not really my cup of tea at all to be honest. has the ambition of something like Cloud Atlas but quite mawkish, syrupy execution for me.

What a banger. If you like layers with your layers, you are gonna love this. The story structure alone is just exceptional, with the way that the author hangs all the plot off the scaffolding of the house in the woods… I honestly recommend it to everyone. Also, gay ghosts. 5 stars. Winner/Gagnant!

I went in with an expectation of it being a story of a cabin in the woods, each generation's story gradually unfolding. But there's so much more beautiful nature writing than I expected, and some Shirley Jackson type ghosts as well. And I think these two genres of nature writing and the supernatural worked really well together. The vivid descriptions of the textures, scents, and patterns found among the woodland fauna and flora emphasise the uniqueness of each season and how differently they all return in following years, decades, and centuries. Whereas the characters we see inhabiting those woods somewhat echo the past generations, reappearing in fammiliar phrases, lost correspondence letters, archaeological findings, ghost hauntings, séances, and the structure of the cabin/house itself when looking back at the architechural changes accumulated and layered over the years.

I also loved how the chapter format varied depending on the subject (letters, farming manual, poems, a physiatrist's personal journal, a flyer advertising a property listing, a true crime magazine), and included photos/illustrations contributing to the atmosphere. The different formats and perspectives also presented the events (especially those pertaining to the supernatural) as ambiguous and could be interpreted differently.

Really unique look at a geography and how it's shaped by time. The writing was compassionate and real and brought me closer to the past.

I always try to begin the year with a book from the top-ten list of the year prior. Out of those masterpieces, North Woods heightened my intrigue the most. And it did not disappoint. The variety in prose and narrative kept me turning page after page. Stories told from countless perspectives (strangers, friends, observers) in countless mediums (letters between lovers, first-person accounts of murder, 1900s true crime publications). All which make you fall in love with an orchard in the north woods of Massachusetts that opens the door to a whole new understanding of this world and the world that comes after.
