Angelopolis, sequel to Angelology, suffers from mid-series syndrome as the book is probably essential to the overall plot, but has difficulty standing on its own. While Angelology is known for its interesting world building, historical mysteries, and fast-paced plot, Angelopolis is slower and feels less urgent. The book begins ten years after the first, and Verlaine is now a notable angel hunter (a fact
that stretched my suspension of disbelief considerably throughout the book, particularly at the end, as you rarely see him do anything that should place him among the higher echelons of hunters. You are merely told that he is great). In Paris, he sees Evangeline who has been in hiding for the past decade. She gives him a long lost Russian treasure, but is then kidnapped by a fearsome foe. Thus, the rest of
the book details Verlaine's attempts to reunite with Evangeline, and the reasons behind her capture.

Like Angelology, the book hinges on our main characters attempts at unravelling some historic mysteries that will allow them to better understand and fight against the nephilim. However, in Angelopolis,
there is not a lot of seeking of knowledge. The characters visit several individuals with important pieces of information, but encounter little danger or struggle. Huge secrets are uncovered simply by asking, and, as a reader, I didn't feel particularly excited by most of these revelations. While some of the ideas were very intriguing, they were quickly dealt with in order for the plot to move forward. However, being that the plot relied on these pieces of information, it would have been nice if the author had spent more time on buildup and explanation (particularly of the details that are potentially world-altering). 

Further depth to the characters would also have been appreciated. Rather than using the plot to expand and grow individuals such as Verlaine and Evangelaine, instead the book treats them as necessary vessels to get through the plot. In contrast to Angelology, they seem to have little agency or character themselves, and I have no reason to understand or care about the choices that they are making. 

Finally, the book's ending feels quite rushed, and the final scene was wrapped up within twenty pages. As I was expecting this novel to be a thriller, I was disappointed with this anti-climactic end, and left more than a little confused about the motivations of the different characters. All in all, I did find this book amusing enough to finish, though not nearly as fun as it's predecessor. If you wish to carry on with the Angelology series, Angelopolis is necessary reading. However, I suspect it is merely a bridge between the first and third books. I would rate it at 2.5 stars.

Angelopolis Similar to Angelolgy, there was a lot that I liked about Angelopolis despite any qualms I may have had. In fact, I'm here to say that I actually enjoyed this book much better than the first. Perhaps it's because of the ample amounts of action, or maybe because of the discoveries that are slowly unearthed, but Danielle Trussoni managed to capture my imagination, and I eagerly paged through this book.
 
Evangeline doesn't play as big of a role in Angelopolis, instead giving way to more information about Verlaine and his posse of angelologists. As Nephilim become more of a threat, Verlaine must work even harder to keep humanity safe. It was so fun to follow him on the hunts, and be introduced to new characters. I'm a huge fan of the tough female characters that make an appearance here. Being an angelologist definitely isn't an easy job. Add in a mystery involving the Romanov family, and you have quite a story.
 
My one gripe, and this is the same one I had before, is that there is a large amount of descriptive writing that slowly bogs down the action. There are pages upon pages of historical information and angelic races. Although interesting in its own right, it does manage to pull the reader out of the overall mystery that surrounds the angels themselves. I'll admit that I skimmed more than a few pages, and yet I still managed to follow the story just fine. Still, this was done much better than the first novel so kudos on that!
 
As I said though, despite anything else I did actually enjoy the story in its entirety. The ending is a huge cliffhanger and so I know that there will be more to come. I'm in for the long haul now. Bring on more angels, more holy wars, and more action. I'll be here waiting for it.

O forte desta narrativa, não é de todo as personagens mas há uma profundidade, um mistério à volta deles que nos faz parar para pensar quem elas são, o que as move, que segredos escondem. Confesso que esta era uma continuação que me andava a atormentar e que fiquei deveras admirada com a forma como autora lhe deu vida, como ela construiu todo um enredo entre cenas bíblicas, ciência e episódios e simbologia histórica, pois não estava de todo a espera das voltas e ligações que este livro traz, daí que me tenha surpreendido pela positiva. Continua a não ser uma leitura fácil mas é, sem dúvida, uma leitura que alimenta a sede de conhecimento e a necessidade de uma leitura que preencha.
Angelopolis é uma continuação que se supera, que surpreende e arrasa todas as expectativas e que precisava de mais presença das personagens mas que não deixa de mostrar que Danielle Trussoni é uma autora que merece a nossa atenção.
