Each book just gets better and better. The very first book in the series came to our store as an ARC and I took it home on a whim- it was love from first read! So, I've read each story and Darynda has sucked me deeper and deeper into her world. Charley Davidson is a good character full of sass & wit, but also compassion & love. I look forward to each installment. This is a wonderful series! Good good fun!

Okay, I am really really really conflicted here. I used to love this series but it seems to have lost its original edge. This book was enjoyable enough but I was expecting so much more! I don’t know, it feels like the author is trying to stretch it all a bit too much and the essence of the series is getting lost along the way. 

I think this has to do more with the plot than with the characters. I still love Charley as much as I used to. She is blatantly immature, cynical, sarcastic and downright annoying. What’s not to love?! Still, her behaviour towards Reyes was very frustrating here. Come on, “it’s a simple yes/no question Dutch”! Why don’t you give the guy a break and say yes once and for all?!

Well, it is true that Reyes isn’t really his good old “son of Satan” self anymore, which is a major let-down. He is such a puppy in this book, I can’t believe it. He wears an apron and even calls Charley “dear” at some point… Seriously? He is still as hot as he used to be but he has become the most boring son of Satan ever! Please please please bring the evilness back! Then again, after reading the last few pages of the book I don't think it's an option anymore (view spoiler)[(with Charley being pregnant and all) (hide spoiler)].

Now the plot is the real problem here. It is just so all over the place. There are too many sub-plots and the main series plot gets completely drowned in them. I want to hear more about the twelve beasts and the prophecies, not about the captain blackmailing Charley (view spoiler)[(that particular sub-plot was completely ludicrous: he blackmails her, it goes nowhere, he wants to turn himself in but it turns out the whole thing was an accident so Charley blackmails him so he doesn’t turn himself in??) (hide spoiler)] or her playing matchmaker with Cookie & Uncle Bob. 

I was about to give the book a two-star rating but, for the love of Charley, I just couldn’t bring myself to it. I’m giving it a three instead (which is more like a two and a half really). I still want to love this series like I used to but this book was such a disappointment that I’m not even sure whether I’ll be reading the next instalment...
